I know this subject has been beaten to death, but there are always new questions: I need a set of dedicated off-road tires in 265/75R16 size for my lifted D2. Having just reshod my other rims with 255/65R16 Michelin Cross-Terrain SUV rubber for everyday use, I want to put a set of Off-roaders on my 2nd set of alloys. I can't justify the expense of Goodyear MT/Rs or Goodrich mudders at $180/ea total, so I looked into Pep Boys Futura Enforcers (made by Cooper)....much better at a price of $130/ea total. Yesterday a friend suggested I look into a set of Mud Kings, and I was quoted a price of $100/ea total. This is a link to the manufacturer info on them: http://www.henisetire.com/spec.cfm?model=MUD%20KING%20XT&Ttype=LT What I'd like to know is, what kind of experience has anyone had with these tires, if any, and is it a worthwhile option? |

I've got the Futura Enforcer MT's in 235/85/16 on my D1. I only paid $94 each, plus I got 10% off the total bill by opening up a PepBoys acct. Remember you'll want to get a matching spare as well. Anyhow, all 5 of mine mounted and balanced were around $550, I've put about 12k miles on them (99% highway, 1% trail) and they seem to be wearing fairly well. They performed very well at Tellico on the rocks, and have gotten me through some nasty mud here in TN as well. Hope my opinion helps.. Later.. RS |

If you are looking for a dedicate wheeling tire, why not get a swamper or something. In those small sizes, they are pretty cheap, they are always tough, and there isn't much that will beat them out on the trails. -P |

Thats not a bad idea Perrone...looking at the Swamper website they don't specify a 265/75R16, but they do have a 265/80R16 which is only 0.2" taller than the 75 aspect. Maybe I should even look at the Boggers? LOL |

Well, Let's not go to extremes! But you should be able to find some good mud tires with very thick sidewalls for a fair price. In fact, you can get some nice bias ply swampers since these will be dedicated wheelin' tires. Once you check the sidewalls on those and see the traction difference, you may not want radials again. I believe the phrase is... just do it! -P |

i think you'd be happy with a set of bias 32x9's over the futura's. |

I've found, after five sets of swampers on my Jeep(sorry) trailer queen that the SSR radials blow the doors off the standard TSL and TSL SX swampers that's mostly on the rocks though. Seems you can leave a bit more air in the Radial and get the same footprint. I've only lost a bead on the SX(with just 3 poound of air) and i've never torn a swamper sidewall but i have torn a BFG |

Looking at the website I am seeing that there are quite a few options for Swampers. I didn't need more options dammit! LOL....okay, I'll be buried in the Interco website for a while now.... Looking at prices at the local distributor, I'm no better off price-wise in a Swamper than I was in the Goodyear MT/R or the Goodrich mudder......I hate to be a cheapskate, but I gotta keep the price down on these. |

Randy, Have you considered Bridgstone. I like their Dueler AT or MT depending on how aggressive you want to get. Bridgestone is known for the hardness of rubber (Easy Garrett) which equates to a longer lasting tire. I ran the Dueler AT, which is a nice tire, but wasn't aggressive enough for my needs. So that leaves the MT. The average price I found for the MT was around $140 for a 265/75R16 tire. Now that is about $40-50 cheaper than a MTR. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Dueler+M%2FT+D673&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=675SR6MT673OWL |

OK Eric, its clear you're trying to make a point... and I gather the point is that I obviously have the XL mixed up with another Michelin Tire...Thanks for pointing that out, I guess I so...can you point me towards some info on the XL? I don't see it listed on Michelins websiet in the USA, Canada, or the UK? |

Michelin XLs are great tires but $$$. There is a MVPA(Military Vehicle Preservation Association) deal that will put a set of the 9.00R16 XL in your hands at $257.50 each. You can get them at any Michelin dealer. To get the MVPA deal, you must have the dealer order the tires on Form "GS"(Sales support claim item #MIE40186). "MVPA 2002" must appear on all sales support documents. The price includes delivery to your local Michelin dealer. Qualified users of this deal: "All those associated with the MVPA". AFAIK, no proof of membership or anything like that is necessary. IIRC Bill's Tire in SoCal had new Michelin XZL in 9.00R16 for $165.00 each. The consumers of the XL, XZL, XML tires are primarily military. Ken |

I can order XZL's through TRG; XL's smallest size is 9x16 and I'm wanting 7.5x16; but what I'm wanting are XCL's for the Series.... And not break the bank doing it........ lol.... -L |

Leslie, Why C's instead of Z's aren't C's directional ? You need to carry two spares but Z's aren't you can carry 1 spare . Is it a retro type thing with the C's ? Just curious , I have a set of Z's that wouldn't break the bank , but not much life left in 'em either . Ed |

Exactly, the retro-thing..... You're absolutely right, the Z's would be more practical, but, I'd just run w/ my usual Dunlop R/Ts in that case.... I'd just like to have a set of C's for the "right" look, in addition to being functional for the Series's use..... it's not like I'm using it as my daily driver.... -L |

the pep boys in arlington heights IL has the 265/75/16 's for $98 a tire tires tires tires if you are really looking for a dedicated trail tire its hard to beat the theBAJA CLAWS I have had bfg's,swampers, swampersx, groundhawgs, mud kings, goodyearMT and driven on a dozen others and none come close to the Baja claws as far as radial vs bias ply...I'll take bias ply everytime...they side hill better they dig better and they hold up way way better but all this is just rederict unless you are truley going to set up a second set of rims if not the futura mt at $98 a skin is a good way to go |

Musky, How much do the Baja Claws typically run? The prices of $130/ea total for the Futuras was including mounting, balancing, road hazard warranty, tax, stems, old tire disposal, everything. The barebones price per tire was $98.99. What was your experience with the Mud Kings? Those are $92 incl mount/bal + $5.66 tax + $1 Pennsy tire tax for $98.66 total. |

Musky, I meant that you implied that you couldn't run bias plys or Baja Claws on a daily. Maybe I misunderstood you. I was just pointing out my positive experience running Bias plys on the street. I was really worried after all the horror stories I had heard, but I was very pleasently surprised. -P |

perrone, the only down side of bias ply on the street is they wear faster, make more noise, and flat spots can be a bummer in cold climats. but in florida the flat spots are not an issue, you can afford to burn them up , and the noise is drowned out by the smile on your face drivving a RR on 34's so for you bias plys arent bad for street use |

Everyone thinks it never gets cold here. It was 37 this morning when I cranked up the truck. The flat spotting has been very mild. At $114 a tire, I don't consider them expensive. The noise is drowned out by the fact I ride with windows open all the time. But riding on 34s is certainly a smile inducing thing! I certainly wouldn't recommend that the average person ride around on Bias Plys, but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. -P |

I was wondering since no comment was made regarding Paul post on Bridgestone Dueler MT's if anyone has any experience with them. Tire Rack customer feedback ranks them high-any opinions? I like my BFG AT/KO's but based on what I've heard I've avoided mud with them. Time to consider upgrading. Thanks, Bob |

Thanks, Muskyman. The Regal and Mudking I haven't come across in my area yet (Oregon)-I'll keep looking. The Kumho Ventura's look good for the price on Tire Rack-any opinions? Not to drag this out further (too late!!) but has anyone had experience with the Cooper ST? I originally wanted the Cooper CTD which is no longer made. It seems to be between my AT/KO and a MT in performance from what I've read, and the ST seems to be Cooper's closest tire to it. What do you think? So many choices, so little money... Bob |
