I posted this earlier in the day but it appears to have been lost in the ozone so I thought I would try again.

I think that my front cover is leaking anti freeze. It appears to be from the RH side (as you look at it) where the long bolts from the water pump go thru. How much of a pain is this going to be to replace the gasket on this, and considering the fact that this engine has 62k miles on it what else should I replace while I am in that far? Enquiring minds want to know..

Mike

I recently had the same issue on my 96 disco SDwith 62k miles. I was press for tme so I had my local shop do the work... It is not too bad. There is a seal or two and an o ring that you should replace while you have it apart. Something like $40 for parts.

A have finally worked my way through all of the oil leaks and the drive way is safe for awhile.

Mike:
Other things to consider:
Cam chain/gears- maybe overkill, but "You're already in there and may as well do what you can while there".

New front cover-the oil pump is an integral part of the front cover and cannot be overhauled. While they are robust and last a while, you're already in there... If you ever have an oil pump fail, you will realize how cheap this insurance is.

Water pump-at 62K, it is a good idea to get this out of the way, while you're in there. Shop around, they can be had inexpensively.

I know I've been flamed for this attitude and told that I must have unlimited reserves of $, but while I don't have unlimited reserves, I do have a number of high mileage vehicles (all over 150K, one at 225K) and I attribute this high mileage to my willingness to replace broken parts and replace those that will eventually break, before they do.

Peace,
Paul

Last I checked one of those front covers was almost $850.00 dollars from a dealer ( was for a 4.6 RR). I have not seen many oil pumps fail if the proper service has been done to the vehicle (slude does seem to kill them). I have one 97 DI that comes in with 190k on it and still has the original one. The timing chain is another item that I have only seen a couple jump time but that was well over 100k. I would recommend checking the chain and if it has excessive play then replace it but odds are it will be ok.
As for the overkill view of installing parts I have a personal story to share. I once did this to a vehicle and within 2 weeks some @$$hole in a BMW attempted to beat a light ( or be ahead of the game for the next one his timing was so far off) and plowed into the side of my 92 chevy truck at an estimated 75mph at full throttle. I had just overspent about $300.00 on it.
Just food for thought . . .
