I have a 99D1 with about 57000 miles. The dreaded check engine light came on yesterday. My first instinct was to pull out a 44magnum and fire a round right into the annoying light. My second thought was to put about an inch long strip of electrical tape over it and pretend it never even exsisted. My third thought was to come to this informative forum and see what others have done. What does the dealer charge to diagnose, how reliable is the diagnosis? What are the top ten culprits that turn on the damn check engine light and what is the repair costs? |

check the 52,500 maintenance thread - the dealer told me the light would probably come on after a certain number of miles - quoted me some BS price of $300 to reset emmissions etc. What happens if we don't get this reset? |

Eric, take it into an Auto Zone or something like that that will read your codes for free. Once you find out the code, bring it back and we can confirm what the code means. Tons of things can set off the light, from o2 sensors, to evap issues, to misfire from bad plugs/wires. Also try and tighten down your gas cap, wait a few cycles, and the light may also go out. |

sq, I believe you are refering to the "service engine" light. My light is on to, I asked earlier but never got a response so I will try again here. Does anyone know what a code P1447 means??? |

Carter, P1447- Evap system Purge Valve open or short circuit fault. There is a link to a list of codes in the thread "Anyone in Chicago" |

Thanks Nathan. Now can anyone give me a better idea of what that is and how serious it is?? |

Carter, I haven't had much experience w/ this but the simple fix is that your gas cap isn't sealed properly. What you could be looking at is a leak in your pressurized fuel system But I believe there is a solenoid that stores fuel vapor when your rover is off. this vapor is burnt off the next time you drive. I think that the biggest problem would be that your engine can run a rich on vapor- it may cause a rough idle before your rover is warmed up. I not an expert so somebody else should speak up if i'm wrong. |

Thanks Nathan, that was actually a lot of help. Anyone else feel free to chime in if you know anything more though. |

There's always the lazyass way of dealing with it which is what I do. I don't have an LR with OBDII but in my '89 RRC with OBDI when the red "check engine" light comes on (center dash binnacle)it will stay on all the time until the code is read and problem fixed. Being lazy, I prefer to assume that the problem is caused by a temporary "glitch" and so instead of having a red light shining at me for days I simply wait until the next stop on my trip and do the following (with engine turned off): Move front passenger seat all the way forward, open rear passenger door and reach way under front pass seat with both hands to the front of the ECU(requires skinny arms), release right side snap holder of pin connector to ECU with right hand, disconnect and pivot connector to ECU out with left hand thus disconnecting ECU, reconnect pin connector to ECU after a few seconds. This effectively resets the ECU by temporarily disconnecting power from the ECU and thus turns off "check engine" light. You could do the same thing by temporarily disconnecting the battery but this method only takes about 20-30 seconds and no tools. I have luckily only had this happen 4-5 times in 10 years of ownership and 90k miles and the light did not come back on for thousands of miles. If it did I would check the areas covered by the light (only a few on OBD 1). One teeny potential problem with the above is if you mess up and can't get the pin connector to realign and snap back onto the ECU! If that happens you are now stuck until you remove the front part of the underseat cover allowing direct access to the front of ECU and pin connector to reconnect (this requires at least a screwdriver and some time)! On my vehicle the yellow "service engine" light is triggered every 52,500 miles as a reminder light for service. To reset there is a small box located under the back part of the front pass seat with a "Land Rover" sticker affixed over a small hole. Simply sticking a very small screwdriver into the hole and causing a short between two small posts resets the circuit and turns off the light. Of course you don't have a Land Rover sticker to recover the hole but the dealer charges $$ to do that! On OBD II vehicles the most likely culprit (and easy to fix)is the gas cap not secured properly. Just my (lengthy)2 cents- |

BTW-I meant the gas cap fix to refer to the "check engine" light not the "Service engine" light. |

OK... I bit the big one and purchased a fancy OBDII code reader for $149.99 at Autozone. Nice unit, not like the cheezy ones you could only get at Sears for $499 a few years ago. Here's the punch line. I hade only one code P1496. Unfortunately it's not on the list. Anyone have an idea of what it could be? The best part about the OBDII device? I deleted the code and "POOF" the check engine light goes out. Worth every penny. Especially knowing that LR charges that much just to open the hood, after you schedule an appointment M-F 8:30am to 4:00pm, take time off work... yadda yadda yadda... |
