I'm getting my new roof rack in a few days and it will clear the stock roof rails, but I think the new roof rack will look better if I remove the stock rails before putting the new roof rack on. What is the best way to do this? How hard is it? Can I use the mounting holes for Hella wiring? |

For future reference, if anyone ever wnats to do this. It took about two hours. You do have to remove sunvisors, handles, and overhead console. The windshield frame has panels that are retained by snap type fasteners... you just have to get your fingers under them and give them a good jerk to pull them free. The panels are much more durable than they look. Same with the actual headliner. I could get my whole hand up over the headliner right onto the fasteners. Everything goes back together easily, the headliner survived without any change in appearance. |

I did choose the redneck variant: take a carpet knife with a thin blade and cut three sides of an aprox. 2x2 square at the 4 right locations into the headliner. Then you can undo the locknuts. Took 10 Minutes ;-) Because of that fluffy surface, the cuts are barely visible later. |

not bad - how about in the rear? How can you drop the headliner back there? How about the trim attachment around hte roof windows? |

remember that you will have 4 big holes in the roof. I used silicone to fill them, them covered it over with white vinyl material let me know if you need a pic of how pig the holes you will be left with are. I like the Euro look, and always try to save weight/ whenever possible |

Somebody earlier this year had a posting about this and they had found a big rubber plug to cover the holes. May be they will repost that or you could check the archives. It would be a good way to prevent water ingress. |
