I am not a Land Rover owner yet (I am working hard on changing that!!). I have driven a few Discoveries varying from 1994 to 1998 vintages. The price difference between them was a few thousand dollars, and in my opinion, well worth the extra money to get a later model with fewer miles. My question however is the GEM system. I will be doing all the work on the truck myself. From what I understand the 1994 and 1995 models do not have the GEM system, and therefore I should be able to tackle just about everything on the truck. Would I have alot of problems working on a 1996 or later model truck with the GEM system? Does the GEM system have alot of problems with it, enough that it should influence my decision to go with an earlier Discovery, to facilitate me being able to fix everything. Also do all the Disco I's have a locking center dif? Thank you very much for your input. I am getting very close to purchasing a Discovery and am quite excited about it. Brian |

Brian I beleive you are correct in that the 1994-54 models are not GEMS. I have a 96 discovery SD. From what I have read, that discos build from 96 to 97 or 98 have had a great deal of problems. I heard it started late in the 1996 model year, but I am not sure. My rig was built in 10/96 and has been quite good of late. Never had any major problems. All discos leak and seap oil at some point in time. I purchased the work worp manual which is key for perfoming any service work on the beast. the 96 disco is OBD 2, so if you have engine faults you will need a OBD-2 scanner to read them. Unlike the OBD-1 in pre-96 discos that have the code read outs under the seat or something like that. Pre-96 models have a distributor and coil while the 96 and on do not. I beleave all D1 have a a CDL but not all D2. Search the archives and other sites for the best model years with the "least amount" of problems. Try to get the service record for the rig you are considiering and see what or what has not been done to it. The truck amazes me every time I take is four wheeling. Good luck |

I now have a '95 Disco (well, the wife has, lol), but I had a '99 DI before. I actually miss the OBD-II that the '99 had that the '95 doesn't.... I bought the cable to use w/ my laptop, so, the truck could literally tell you what's wrong with it. Really handy, IMHO. The big problem with OBD-II trucks isn't the OBD-II, it's the fact that for some reason in the shift from the 3.9L to the 4.0L, the engine became more suceptible to sludge-formation. It's more critical to use a good oil and filter and to keep it changed regularly with the 4.0, moreso than the 3.9. The sludge-formation is what leads to the valves sticking, which is what has given the '96-on Discos a bad rap. IMHO, when shopping for a Disco, look for one that's well cared for, that has a clean history, and work on a preventative-maintenence schedule. Good luck! -L |
