Looking hard at the '03 SE. Dealer said he could swap the 18's for the 16's, no problem. I know that 16's would afford me better off road tire upgrade choices down the line, but don't they ride a little better on road as well?

The bigger the wheel the better it will ride on the street.

While purchasing my 2003 SE, I had the opportunity to test drive the S model with 16" Michelins along with the SE model with 18" Goodyears. The SE had the better on-road ride, though I will admit that the 16" tire/wheel combination will offer you more options for off-road tire upgrades.

If a majority of your driving will be on-road, you might want to consider keeping the 18" tire/wheel combo and buying 16" wheels for when you go off-road. Browsing through the classifieds on discoweb, I see 16" wheels for sale fairly frequently.

Good luck with your purchase,

The 18" rims are worth more than the 16". If you swap them you should get $$ back. Otherwise. you can buy a set of 16" rims for $150-200 - lots of folks try to trade up to 18" and then sell their old rims for cheap.

(I have a set of 18" rims and 2 sets of 16" rims)

I would not advise trying to take 18" rims offroad, the sidewalls of the tires just don't hold up and the tires are serious $$. (And just try buying a replacement in Bishop!)

The 18's have better lateral stability due to shorter walls and there for less "rolling" of the tires.

The 16's "roll" alot more and there for have less stability in hard corners due to the larger sidewalls, but you can air them down and they sit the rim higher off the ground for better protection

But the ride will be harder on the 18's since there is less shock absorbtion from the sidewalls.

I got them to swich my 18's for 16' when I bought my 03SE since I am doing the off road thing.
