I am trying to remove the tires on my 1999 disco. I used the lug wrench attached to a 6 foot pipe clamp and was unable to turn the lugs. I think I was pulling hard enough that the lug wrench started to bend.

After looking more closly I noticed that these "lugs" move somewhat freely in and out. Are these caps? If so how do I remove. I tried using two screwdrivers and trying to pry them off but had no luck, however they do move freely outward for about 1/8 of a inch..

What am I doing wrong??

Thanks...

The caps stay on, it's just one of those wierd things on your rover. Definitely just leave them on.

It sounds like someone really over-torqued your lugs. Take it to someone with an impact wrench, and have them loosen those babies up!

Lastly, a pipe wrench is not the tool you want to use. Go get yourself a six sided socket of the right size (I don't have it off hand, but you should be able to find it.) and a torque wrench. The $40 one I bought from Home Depot works great.

yeah, I went and looked its 1 1/16. Its probably really supposed to me a metric size but that is easier to find and seems to be what most people around here use with no problems. Pick up a cheap torque wrench and a good breaker bar and you will be set. Oh make sure you get a deep socket and you might also want a SMALL extension.

1 1/16 is a tighter fit.

Sorry. I stand corrected. 1 1/16 is obviously far superior to my measley 27mm socket. I just can't win today.
