Replacing Tires on my 98'disco Not an offroader, But live in N.J. Does anyone have any experence with the Pirelli's A/t's ? The XPC's seem to be fazeing out of production. 235-70-16 is the size, Are there any other manufactures? The current Michelins gave me 60,000 miles and still have 5/32 tread life left. I would really appreicate any advice. Thanks, MarkTlumacki

I had a set of Pirelli Scorpions on my 97 discovery. I liked them. I ran 255/70R-16s. Check out Bridgestone's new AT/Revo. Great tire at a really good price.

Mark,

I have a set of Dunlop Radial Rover A/T on my 95 disco and they are very good. They don't wear down a whole lot and are more quieter on the road than the XPCs (so now you can hear the transfer case whine now :)). The ride seems to have gotten better since the Dunlops where fitted as well.

They were really cheap too, much less than the XPCs.

Off roading, they are very good until you hit the slick stuff (i.e. mud) so if you are still interested in seeing what the truck can do, the Dunlops can deliver.

Max T.
Sorry Leslie, I got here first :)

I have a 99 D1 and I agonized over what tire to put on after the stock XPCs were at about 55,000 miles. They still had tread, but the previous owner did not do a good job rotating and the tires were cupped.

I looked at everything out there and did quite a bit of research. In the end I went with a new set of XPC's. Here's why.

I was told that the XPC was designed specifically for dual purpose. And like everything Germans do it was to the extreme. I was told that the XPC was designed to take an 8" high curb straight on at 35mph without damage, specifically for the Rovers. That it was designed to be aired down to 6psi indefinitely (low range), aired up to 50psi, and remain rated at 130mph for the Autobahn. That is quite a tire.

Many of these qualities were to be promoted and touted, and Michelin was going after the BFG market through focusing on the Rovers first.

After the Firestone debacle, the market campaign was scrapped. All tire companies retracted to higher ground. The XPC was shelved in favor of the Synchrone which would never be aired down.

Hence, all the development for the XPC is lost in a prudent marketing decision. So, I went with a set of the XPCs. My advice... get them while you still can.

I have the Scorpian A/Ts on my 95 Disco and like them on and off road. One size up at 245/70/16 - no trimming and no rubbing like the 245/75s. I have 50K on them and say I've got 5-10K left.

Take a good long hard look at the Michelin Coss Terrain SUV tires. I've not had them on long, but I am thrilled with them thus far and they are rated quite highly in the Tirerack survey.

Has anyone used Michelin LTX M/S? The Michelin website has both the XPC and LTX rated at an 8. LTX seems to have a longer tread life. XPC 208.00 LTX 123.00. Need to buy tires soon.

If you are going the the stock 235/70-16 size,
consider the Pirelli Scorpion AT from the Tire Rack. You will notice that it is the only "Off-Road/All Terrain" tire other than the Michelin XPC that is HR rated (but only in the 235/70-16 size). At $93/ea they are an attractive deal compared to the $135/ea "closeout" price on the Michelin XPC, which will soon become unavailable.
I have used XPCs for 7 years and have always liked them. I would consider the Scorpion AT's to be "the next best thing". When my ccurrent set of XPC's wears out on the 91 Rangie, I will be going to the Scorpion ATs.

I give my Scorpions that came on my truck an "OK" rating. OK onroad and off, but not great. Same with treadwear, they arent so bad I am replacing them, but when they wear out it will be trying my first set of Dunlaps (either RTs or whatever) or more than likely getting BFG ATs.

Funny you should ask...I just ordered up $1k worth of Pirelli Scorpion AT's this morning. 1 set of 255x70x16 for the wifes 1999 D2 to replace the Michelin crap that came on it. Every winter the D2 in the "only" vehicle we own that consistently slides off the driveway and into the yard with a moderate amount of snow in the driveway. I thought it was her hell bent for leather driving style until I tried it....did the same thing. The other set 32x11.5x15 for the 73FJ40, got some new aluminum wheels for using it more on the street, the steelies with the mudders will be saved for their intended purposes. I also have a set (actually second set) on the 89 FJ62. It was their performance on road and moderate off road (90/10)that sold me on them. So I guess I like them.
