1997 Discovery SD - front wheel drive works, but the rear wheels don't pull. I'm essentially driving with only the front drive shaft pulling the whole vehicle. I really need help!!

stock set up
61,000 miles

What is the evidence?

Maybe a blown rear diff.

The diff was just replaced. No noises or anything. How would I check the diff to make sure it was working properly?

How do you know that rear wheel drive isn't working in the first place? What are your symptoms?

Well, if there is no noises from it...it should probably be making some really bad noises from it if the inner workings were broke, that is if the drive shaft was spining. Did you just wake up one morning and no drive? If the diff was to blow, you would hear it! Does the drive shaft spin when moving?

Again, what is the evidence that it no longer has drive in the rear.

I jacked up the front, put the vehicle in drive, and nothing happend (I was checking another problem). The strange thing is that the rear drive is restored when locking the diffs. Could it be the transfer case?

That's the way it is supposed to behave when your center diff is open. The power will go to the wheel with the least amount of resistance, i.e the jacked up wheel. When you lock the center diff, it will be distributed between front and rear. The front and rear diffs are open in a stock Disco. From what you are saying here, you don't have a problem, your Disco is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Read the "Basics" article in the "discovery" section on this site for more information.

I just spoke to Atlantic British and the guy told me that the vehicle chooses which drive to engage based on the vehicles needs. He said front wheel drive is normal. Weird - what good is all wheel drive when it's not always engaged?

It is always engaged, but all wheel drive does not mean that all 4 wheels have power at all times. That is a common misconception.

That guy at Atlantic British seems to be one of those with very deep product knowledge *lol*.
Parrish, you have all-time 4wd with a disco AND your vehicle is allright. What puzzles me: If you have jacked up the front and engaged drive, what did you expect would happen?

I guess I'm just a little paranoid with all of the problems I've experienced with my Discovery. For once it seems that everything is okay. This is a real relief. Thanks for all of the feedback. The piece of mind is comforting.

This is very funny. Parrish---it was not too long ago that I was baffled by the system also. I have a basic understaning of how it works now and it makes sence but I had to do a lot of reading. People kept telling me what happens and i trusted it on faith but until I started reading to understand WHY it works that way did I become more comfortable. Read Axle's article and then go to "how things work" and read about differentials. Your center differntial functions the same way that your axle diffs work only it ties your drive shafts together.

Good luck. I am laghing with you not at you. lol

Thanks Brian. The sentiments are greatly appreciated. As for laughing, I'm laughing at me - you should've seen me trying to work the drive train on jacks! Not recommendend for the novice mechanic!

very lucky the center diff was working.had the diff lock been engaged sombody or something would have been hurt.very lucky you own a disco, not all 4x4 vehicles have t case center diffs.some things are better left for professionals.
