Someone told me that the rear O2 sensors on my 1997 Discovery don't do anything except notify the driver when the catalytic convertors need replacing. Can anyone confirm this?

O2 or Lamda sensors are an important part of the fuel injection system and work closely with the ECU to monitor the richness of fuel. The O2 sensors are acutally located in front of the cats.

On the 1997 Discovery there are four (4) O2 sensors - 2 in front of the cats and two just after the cats.

Hello....I have a 95 disco and the fault code reader reads 44 . I read somewhere that is the left bank Lamda sensor. I used to loose power all of a sudden and I could hear the engine knocking....I added BG44 and it cured it....But I am not sure if the message is from the knocking that happened sometime ago....or really due to the O2 sensor ?? I still have starting trouble hot or cold...Did change fuel filter...Can O2 sensor cause starting trouble ????
Thx

Parrish,
What you have been told is correct. I have first-hand knowledge since one of my sensors behind the cat died. I talked to several different buds that are high-tech mechanics and they told me the same story.
I would be very interested to see any information disputing this.

I disconnected my two rear sensors Sunday. I have noticed ZERO problems, and actually think my fuel mileage has increased (maybe it's me). Next step is to cut off those two crappy cats and install a single superflow. Thanks for the feedback.

I've had the same problem (sudden loss of power, knocking, AND on the HIGHWAY) and the check engine light came on at 74,000km. Took it to the dealer and told me it was due to a faulty O2 sensor and replaced it for 900 bucks.... after that it's been running fine

Parrish,
Excellent thread. Please let us know if the disconnect causes a fault light or the ecu to throw a code. Thanks.

Yes (all of the above). Easy solution - I took out the bulb to the check engine light.

Are the rear O2 sensors different from the fronts? Ie, would a rear function as a spare?

Yes. All four are the same. I wouldn't use the rear sensors in the front slots unless they were brand new out of the box. You might get some contamination from the convertors that could hurt the sensor.
