Hi, I am new here and very glad to find this website. I know I'll be here most of the time from now on.

As the title states, I am seriously looking into buying a '98 Disco. It has 82K freeway, shopping mall and soccer field miles but no off-road excursion. The couple who owns it are very nice and want to buy a '03 Disco II. It has been maintained by a LR Dealer and no current problems. I will make an offer this week and I am really very excited about it. I can do some mechanical/electrical work but haven't worked on a LR. Some of my questions are:
1) Any major issues on the '98 Disco?
2) At 82K miles, will I enjoy it for at least another 80K miles?
3) What should I look for when I see it and test drive?
Thanks in advance and I am sure I will be back once I get it. Cheers!
BTW, this will be a recreational / weekend / foul weather vehicle for the family. :) My brother has an '01 Disco II but he does not know much yet. :(

Hi Phil,

I have a 98 D1 as well. Some things to look for are:

1) Excessive rusting on backdoor doglegs, rusting around alpine windows, underneath the doors. These are common areas on Discos.

2) Sound of cracked manifold (will sound like a pipe rattling on cold starts). I know because I had to replace RHS this summer.

3) Even though you may not take it off-road, check that your central diff locking lever is working and not siezed up. You never know when you'll need it.

4) Leaky and improperly functioning sunroofs. Same goes with windows. Window regulators on Disco's seem to be a common contention.

5) If have seat warmers, make sure they work. Same goes with rear windshield defrosters. Switch that operates the rear defroster, also operates the defroster for side mirrors. Check to see both work.

6) Basic under carriage damage (ie. bent steering rods - doesn't have to happen off-roading, can happen from careless driving over stuff).

Can't comment on the mileage though. I only have 53,000 miles on mine but the engine seems to be running strong and aside from the manifold problem earlier this year, I haven't had any other problems. How much are sellers asking??

I'm sure there are a lot of other things I've missed but others will chip in their comments. This should be a good start though.

I have a 1999 D1 with about 60000 miles. We do go off road alot. Mostly unimproved dirt roads with bumps and ruts. We love the Disco. It is like a tank.

So far it has been reliable. I have only had a few minor glitches. There is a substantial amount of support for this particular model. The D2 is up and comming in comparison.

Rest assured there are arguments for and against D1 verses D2. You should be able to get the D1 for $9000 to $12000 or so. Don't pay too much!!

Thanks for all your replies. I just realized that this is a tech forum and probably should have posted on the general discussion forum. I am really excited and hopefully the owner will take my offer of $12K vs. their asking price of $15K.
Probably my 1st mod would be a spring/shock combo and good A/T tires. I will be reading a lot and hopefully the Disco community can help me out. Happy motoring!
