I was interested in what the consensus is on putting synthetic oil in the tranfer case and the differentials. Are there any pros or cons of it. Or should I just stick with regular 80/90.

Thanks

99 D2. It's what's recommend by LR and it's what the dealers use, so I use Mobil1 with a little Lucas HD.

I put mobil 1 in my 88RRC, t-case, diffs and swivels. Very happy. It did leak a little more, but I wouldn't expect less from a Rover.

You can also put mobil 1 ATF in your transmission and power steering. I noticed the biggest change in the transmission. Smoother shifting and downshifting.

Check out www.mobil1.com.

It answered many of my questions.

Oh, forgot, since you change those fluids less often, more benefit with syn. Holds up longer.

You can get it cheaper at Sams or Wal-Mart.

"You can also put mobil 1 ATF in your transmission "

Be very careful with this. Much more bad has come than good from synthetic in ZFs.

Ron-

What's been your experience with synthetic ATF in ZF's?

Thanks-

ZF's. WHat ZF's. Audi ZF's prefer Synthetic lube and come from the factory with it.
Dont know about the Rover ZF though. Other than being way for robust than the Audi ZF. :-)

Personally, I use Snake oil. Some guy sold me a bunch outta the back of his van in a nearby alley.

I believe Ron's reference was to the ZF 4HP22 automatic trans in LR's. I've used Mobil 1 Syn ATF in mine as well as Borg-Warner TC for 90k with no probs or leaks. I've also used it in my PAS but it leaks like hell! (I'm putting in reman box from Meridian now).

Go to www.ZF.com and under listing for approved lubricants for 4HP22 and 24 it does not list any synthetics so I wondered if Ron knew something I didn't. I've only had good luck with it and BMW recommends Mobil 1 ATF for their auto trans including the ZF 4HP22.

The ZF in my '97 gave it up completely after a switch to synthetic (Amsoil) after approx 8000 miles. All was well before the switch to synth.

I still haven't gotten around to taking apart the old trans, so can't say for sure it was the sunthetic, but since it gave no signs at all before the switch and all after the change, it is suspect. This was a low mileage trans also

At the time, I did a bunch of surfing on some BMW and Mercedes boards and there were more than a few reported cases of problems with synth in ZF's there also.

Anyway - that was my situation. Have gone back to regular Dexron and changing every 15K or so with no problems since.

It ends up being about 1/2 qt in each diff and the t-case.
