Hi Gang ! 96 D1 106Kmiles. Week ago, the Check Engine light came on. Ran fine. Light went out after 4 days. Ran fine. Light back on 2 days later, still ran fine, then today, cranks but no start. Will procure fuel pressure guage tomorrow to test the fuel pump performance. I'm a bit nervous because, a month ago, I replaced plugs, wires, fuel filter,and renewed my K&N air filter. Despite reading posts trashing the K&N filter, I chose to renew it rather than replace with paper. Followed instructions to the letter but might I have fouled the MAF causing the above no start scenario ? It's been running really well since the work last month and I'm hopefull that the fuel pump has just reached the end of it's lifespan. Any comments, advice, or opinions are appreciated.

Have you checked for a code fault? If the check engine light came on it should have registered a code. FYI, I happen to be one of the folks who had a bad K&N experience.

MAF sensor codes are common, yet rarely is it the actual fault.

Time to return to the basics, Fuel and spark.

With a GEMS engine, if you don't find the spark and fuel, then, it is time to start looking to OBD II for answers.

As for the K&N filter, I have more than 50K miles on mine and no problems with it yet. Use the oil sparingly.

Thanks for the feedback. I feel a little better about the K&N. I don't have the OBDII reader yet. Just ordered it. Will try testing the fuel pressure tonight.

I had a similar situation on my 99 D2. Turns out it was the crankshaft position sensor (corroded with mud, finally failing). Not sure if the 96 D1 has that thing or not, guess it's needed for the distributor-less ignitions.

Update: Turned the key tonight and it started right up. Check Engine light still on. Fuel pressure with ignition on was ~37, with engine running ~30psi. I now await the arrival of my OBDII reader. Don't want to drive it until I understand what the code is/ means. The last time I had a few days without being able to start it was when my ECU got soaked. Not the case this time. Perplexed and waiting patiently, I will drive the lowly 89 Trooper II, again, tomorrow. Thanks for your comments.
