I want to replace the stock radio / cassette in my disco
with an aftermarket indash radio / cd. I was looking at a
Kenwood unit at circuit city that met my needs, and when I
talked to a sales droid about installation he said that all LR
speaker systems are amplified and to install an after market
head unit they would have to re-wire the entire car to bypass,
the stock wiring. Anybody have an opinion on this?

If a rewire is needed I'll do it myself, but for the past 8 years
any new rig I have bought,1 Toyota and 2 Dodge Ram pickups,
radio replacement has been a plug and play deal.

I don't know if it's true, but if it is than I would think that maybe one of the Yamaha head units that acts as pre-amp only with no amplifier might be in order?

i'm doing the same as you right now on my '94. it's true, but i don't see why a total re-wire is in order. i'm just going to connect my speaker wires to the outgoing wires at the back of the amp (under the passenger seat) and then run them under the center console to the new head unit. i'm processing the color codes on the wires right now through my haynes manual and this board. i've pulled the speakers, but both fronts have black with black and white leads (so much for tracing). if none of this works, then i'll (groan) rewire all the speakers as well. i'll run a line-out from my head unit to the amp so i can still use my subs in the rear door until i can get myself a real sub and replace all the speakers. i think it'll all work, and it beats the hell out of running new speaker wire throughout my disco. i'll post results later.

I wired my alpine in with just one small modification and that was to connect the preouts from the head unit to the wires going to the amp. If you do a search on I believe radio harness you will find some pretty good info. My alpine took me about 45 min from start to finish to hook up. few simple things you will need volkswagon harness, ground isolators (for very clear sound if you get noise) and some RCA connections be cause the wires going to the amp will need to be converted to connect to the rca plugs. I installed an Alpine cd/mp3/xm ready head unit in my 97.

You don't even have to take the wires from the amp back up to the radio. You can just by pass the amp "at the amp" take the amp imputs and connect them to the outputs. I haven't done a LR in some time but cars like volvo honda and acura the harness that they use at the amp is female at the input and male at the output. You jst unplug them at the amp and plug them in together.

Not so on my Disco stock amp. At least not by what I could see. I would have done that if I could have. The wires are already there so you just need to hook the wires to the RCA plugs from the volkswagon harness. I'll take a picture when I get a chance.

o.k., i've finally got most of the wires color coded. i didn't get to finish the job last night because my girlfriend showed up (guess that means i'm out of the doghouse; my disco will miss me). anyway, i couldn't plug the in's and out's together at the amp because they are all incorporated into one plug. the only problem i've encountered is "where are the sub wires?" i have the same vw wiring harnass diagram as everyone else, and it doesn't show sub connections. i also have an identification chart for the land rover wire harnass, and in the location it gives for the sub connections, my harnass has nothing. in the 10-pin connecter, only 8 connecters are used in my harnass, while the i.d. chart shows all 10 being used. so which are the wires for the sub? what color are they? any ideas, anyone? this is on my '94 disco.
