This applies to 1999-2001 model years, two issues that working together will give you a nightmare. 1) Throttle cable sticking: "At the time of production the accellerator cable can become kinked during vehicle assembly. This could result in a wear point in the cable that can lead to the breakage of the interior cable strands. Frayed cable strands could result in the throttle sticking in the open position. A struck throttle could increase the risk of a vehicle crash." 2) "Contamination of an Anti-Lock Breaking System (ABS) sensor can cause the existing ABS electronic Control Unit (ECU) software to incorrectly interpret the sensor signal. This can result in inappropriate ABS activation during brake pedal application, when the vehicle speed is less than 25 mph. This can lead to an increase in braking distance that is unanticipated by the driver." So, get thee to the dealership immediately for possible repairs. Karen |

OTOH Michael if that throttle sticks wide open, you'll get here sooner! Just beep the horn a lot (G). Karen ;) |

Heheh... If you only the knew the load I will be carrying tomorrow. Talk about a buttload of kinetic energy!!!! I can see it now: "Police lucky to find thin jam of DNA material from speeding Disco found pasted against freeway pillar..... identification of drive now possible..." Let us hope that does not come true!!! |

Spoke with the dealership in Vegas this morning and the service manager said that Rover doesn't have the parts available yet to address the two recall notices. So, the dealerships can't do anything about the recalls just yet, anyway. Emilio |

Blame any speeding tickets on the stuck throttle.... |

I spoke to LR Richmond in VA this morning. I'm scheduled for next Tues (3/19) and the service guy said it should take 2hrs or so... not the half day as the letter mentioned. -Tommy |

The news from LR Alexandria today was that they have the parts as of this morning. The service manager said they were shocked the letter had gone out a week ahead of what they'd anticipated. Maybe that accounts for the lack of parts at some dealerships. He also told me it was about a two hour job. I'm not in for two weeks. He said he'd answered literally hundreds of calls today alone. Woop de doo. Lets see I have had both 1 and 2 happen on the DI. If your throttle does stick DO NOT SHUT OFF THE TRUCK. Pop it into neutral and let it hit the rev limiter This way you keep power brakes and power steering and your wheel will not lock. Ask me how I know

yeah... for future reference make sure that your off-roading hasn't led to a large buildup of sticky oily mud paste on the throttle cable. It's a little unpleasant. |

Can I assume that this recall notice has only been received in the USA? If not where else in the world? I have a 1999/2000 DII and no recall notice yet (South Africa?. |

Kyle, How many times has your truck had the throttle stuck open? while towing? On I81 going down hill? I will tell you it was an aweful lot of fun trying to pull off to the side with manual brakes running that heavy. Had I not had another rover behind me on the CB who was able to put on his hazards and pull off to the side I don't know that I could have made it on and off safely. In hindsight I rather have listened to the beeping of the damn rev limiter than struggle with that. Ron |

Well Ron , I have a Ford F-350 4x4 in the driveway that I used to tow the race car with and that has a hell of alot more ass then the Disco does. It also has the old style throttle cable that is known for sticking. So to answer your question.. Several times. First off , that gear selector on the right of you has more positions then just "D" and can be used to slow you and limit the engine RPM while doing it. Secondly , panick is not your friend. If you arent on some twisty freakish section of road with something on a trailer why the urgency to stop RIGHT NOW and pull over ? 81 isnt all that damn twisty so I imagine you had some time to calmly get the truck stopped . Whats a rover behind you with hazzards gonna do to help? And what happens when you let the little engine free wheel and it grenades all over ? Then ya aint got no steering , no brakes and no damn engine. The key thing is to not freak out... (Guilty of doing so myself a few times) You realize that in some cases , if you down shift and turn the ignition off , the trans will stay engaged and you will keep the engine vacum up and the power steering going? Kyle Rob , shuddup , you needed some payback for the damper |

WTF are you talking about? The PS does not help me its the brakes that I was looking for. Somehow I don't think you are going to get enough vacuum to have power brakes from leaving it in gear, but I assure you I will give it a shot. I did not panic, strangely it did not even suprise me. The series truck used to go full throttle until I found a way to secure idle stop solinoid on the carb. But no power brakes, PS or steering wheel lock to worry about there just hit the kill switch. I had the trip up to the top of the hill to think about it and do everything I could think of to unstick it. By the time I got near the top I was getting to a speed which towing would not be much fun. The rover behind me was the only way I made it back on the highway with the truck barrelling down the left lane hitting me while I pulled out. 0-80 times with another truck on the hook is not too good with a disco. So do what you want. Personally I think if you blew the engine on a DII LR would replace it for you. Ron PS how many other rover owners out there drive with their hand on the tranny brake or is it just me? |

i still like the 'cruise control' that evan's IIA has. safe too!! haha. i did not use it......was too concerned and worried about keeping it between the yellow and white lines. that and remembering to pump those brakes. |
