Hey all,
I just got a 2002 Disco II about 2 months ago. I want to do some of the cool mods you all talk about, but I want to do them as they are needed and helpful. I do moderate off roading and of course the sometimes really bad winter driving here in Utah, but other than that nothing TOO extreme.
My question to you is what things should I do first to my truck. I am thinking of being in kind of a protectionist mode for now (sliders, underbody gaurds, etc.) Then as the years wear on do suspension, bumber etc upgrades.
Please give me some idea of what you think are good things to do right off the bat that are worth the money to do. Thanks for you input!

Ken,

Sounds like you're leaning toward the same strategy I'm using on my '00.

From personal experience this weekend, I highly recommend armor, then lift. Even if you add 2" of clearance, you're still looking at the potential to wreck your sills or door panels if you do even moderate rock crawling. While the lifts look cool, and certainly add to your truck's ability, Armor, Armor, Armor.....

IMHO

Ken,

I went backwards...I don't recomend this technic.

I went lift, tyres, cones, rear sg drop kit, rear locker, diff gaurds, front locker, cb radio, sliders. I agree.....definatly go with protection first. I wish I would have done that...my truck would look a lot better than it does now and I would haved saved money over the long run too.

But I think most important is not to get too hung up on finding the "perfect" modification because you will drive your self nuts and it will make it hard to make a decision. analisys paralisys will keep you from doing anything.

Great. Thanks Brian and George. It is just good to know that I am not too far off in my strategy to protect first then as my driving becomes more agressive, my modifications should fit that pattern.

My dad used to always say that 9 times out of 10 whether you get stuck or not wasnt due to what sort of gear you had, but how you drive the truck you have.

Thanks again!

Ken - I am in the same position with my 2000 DII. The order I am taking is wheels/tires (my truck came with 18" rims), then front bumper (DII has no 'safe' front recovery points), diff guards and sliders. This will provide some useful armor for the inevitable. My $0.02.

The rear bumper and front airdam has been torn off every DII I have seen wheel.

I would do front diff gaurd, lift, sliders, front bumper, rear bumper.

Ken,

Every D2 I seen go through technical trails have had issue's with the front air dam and rear bumper as Ron said. Diff Guards are a must and I recommend South Down if you can get your hands on them. As far as sliders are concerned, this is a heated Dweb issue. I went with Rovertym and I am pleased with John's product.

One thing to think about is weight. You start hanging all this metal off your D2, it will definately help to beef up your suspension with OME HD's.

Ken,

Nice to hear someone requesting advice on practical mods. The DSII really is quite capable off the showroom floor. Just moving up one tire size to an all-terrain will give you/Rover more trail confidence. Getting the Center Diff Lock engaged (If possible on your DSII ) is vital for safer off-road control and traction. For body protection, you really can't go wrong with a rock slider that has a backer plate such as the Trek.

Keep in mind, every upgrade usually inspires the need for another upgrade. Before you know it, the original upgrade is being replaced because it is no longer ideal for that next "major" improvement.

Plan well, and good luck$$
