So last night I took a little detour through a muddy field thats schedualed for development in my 98 disco. (on company time wearing a suit and tie!) I hit some wicked bumps a little too fast driving onto the field. I'm sure at least two wheels were well into the air. Spent several minutes pulling donuts to muddy up the truck in the field. On the way back to the road I hit the same bumps. Again I was going to fast, truck caught air, real fun stuff.
Once I get back on pavement I notice that my hazard lights are flashing and my signal lights wont work. At the same time there was a tick, tick, tick noise coming from the glove box area on the passenger side. I stopped and pulled the hazard lights/horn fuse under the hood so at least the lights wouldnt flash all the way back to the office.
When I got to the office I turned the truck off, restarted it and put the fuse back in. All was back to normal. I guess all is well that ends well but the question remains. What the hell was going on? Did I trip the inertia switch or something? This ever happen to anyone else?
Thanks guys, I love this site.
Dan

I've had the tick tick noise from my glove box, when i went way to deep in a creek, but my truck wouldn't crank after i got back on dry land. All it would do, is when i turned the key on it would tick.

yeah it will do that. happened to me a few times. nothing to worry about. usually turning the truck off and waiting will take care of it.

It was your inertia switch that got trigger.. that's just a caution to have the flashers go off... in case you really go into an accident. Depending on how hard you hit a bump.. it will just trigger off the flashers.. there is a plunger on the firewall (passenger side) that will also be tripped that shut fuel off if you hit really hard.. a key cycle (put into park, turn off, take key out, and then restart) should reset the flashers, if you trip the fuel shit off.. just pull the plunger up and truck should be fine.

Ya your inertia switch was triped by the wicked bumps you hit...right on!

This happened to me once when I bottomed out on some trail dips at the top of Mengel Pass on my way into Butte Valley. After rummaging under the hood to no avail, the re-starting routine described above reset everything. Good to hear your truck is getting the hard use it deserves.

I have triggered my switch several times, and its a pain in the butt to have to stop and turn the ignition on and off twice. Is there a way to disable it?

Al,

its for safety.. not sure you would even want to disable.. in case you were actually in an accident.. fuel pump would shut down (fire hazard) and the flashers would go off to alert others you were having a problem...
