Hi, when I am sitting at idle, my 96 D1 has a very distinct tick, tick, tick from the engine--no it's not a bomb:) Just wondering if it could be due to the ignition needing to be advanced/retarded? Also, when I bought it, I found what looked like a piece of the manifold gasket. Could the lack of the gasket cause piston noise to be more pronounced? Thanks in advance for your input.

check your header\exhaust bolts. they come loose - tighten up the three bolts and you're set......for a while ;)

I experienced a noise like that. My mechanic did the advanced/retarded thing and the noise went away.

Rocker arms may also be the source. This is common in the Rovers and three TIB's have been published on the problem. If it was an exhaust leak you should be able to hear it all the time. Worth makes a copper locking nut that fits this application and does not loosen up. Your truck is a 96 with the GEMS engine management system so retarding/advance the timing is not an option. The system uses knock sensors to regulate timing. The only time I have seen timing be an issue is if the owner uses 87 octane instead of 93

Last I checked the rocker arm shafts were only around $65.00 a side for the parts

Thanks for your replies. I will try tightening up the bolts a little, and if that doesn't work, I'll check the rocker arms.

Rocker Arms are your problem. Dealers are constantly doing valve jobs on '96 and later trucks to rememdy this. Most likely you will just learn to live with it.

This is very common on Disco's. Surprised not many other people had mentioned this one.

Where did you price the rocker arm shafts? Thanks,

A dealer. Land Rover just dropped the price on a lot of parts that were common warranty repairs to save money on the dealer mark-up.

My 98 did that. I figured it was a lifter and was going to have it looked after at the next service. My dealer is 3 hours away. Luckily, I was within 3 miles of the dealership when the lifter collapsed; God awful noise. I limped into the dealer and they had it fixed the next day.
