I am living in BC, Canada and graduating from U in a year. I am now planning on what vechicle to get once I graduate. I'm currently driving a stock 96 discovery and my parents are offering to let me keep it. But so far seeing the repair bills on it made my head spin (1k for "blown gasket" at 72,000km, 900 bucks for "faulty O2 sensor", premium gas guzzler, rear cargo step just fell limp 2 days ago, etc, etc) though I LOVE its ability offroad and I use it to get closer to the hiking trails I go on holidays even in winter. But I've been looking around (haven't test drove anything yet) and the Nissan Xterra and the Jeep Liberty stirs some interest in me. I could maybe use my savings and trade in my disco for either. what do you guys think? both the nissan and the jeep runs on regular gas so probably easier on the wallet than the disco on upkeep? but does either of them really hold up to at least same level as the disco for light offroad/snow trails? I don't wanna be fooled by nissan's commercials of rock music and mud and the liberty's wearing of the jeep badge.

both the nissan and the liberty are cars that ride high

both are IFS and both will be shit offroad

they both suffer from no flex.

they both have great ad campaigns aimed at you!

yes you the soon to graduate wishes to look cool in a "offroad" vehicle

so step outa the way and let them aim at the next guy.

you own a disco you really own a offroad vehicle

Well, I thought long and hard to even responding to a question of wether you should trade your disco in!!!

If you were to do that (and I would not) I would probably go for the Jeep. Though I have not driven either one, I have heard OK things about the Jeep Liberty on light to moderate trails. The Xterra seems more like a gimick.

I see..... thanks for the backgrounder guys! guess I still have a year to think about this...
oh and hmm... also I forgot to add in the other option that crossed my mind
what do you guys think of the Freelander? I wanna hear from guys who first owns a disco than the guys in the other forum who has a freelander.

A Freelander is not four wheel drive, its all wheel drive so if you really need to depend on the capabilities of a real 4x4 (your disco) than it won't cut it. I have driven one a few times and they are nice and capable and are priced pretty good.

My 2 cents...learn how to work the Disco and keep it. I still have a warrant left on my Disco II but am planning on doing as much work at home on it as I can. This saves dough on labor.

Before you decide on the Jeep or Xterra drive a FL. I test drove all of them and I bought the FL. I sold my 96 Disco this past August pretty much to due the gas milage. I have at least one more year of driving 400 miles a week while the old lady is finishing up her degree in a different city. DO I miss the Disco yes.. Will I buy another one.. Hell yes. Next year in fact BUT I will be keeping the FL and getting rid of the Honda for a Disco again.
In the FL my gas expenses have gone down quite a bit and they can do some off roading but not as extreme as the Disco. Look at what best fits what your needs for now.
As for snow driving and light off road you really cant beat the FL. Honeslty when I am deep in the muck though I would want to be in a Disco.
www.mylander.com has some video of when we took 3 of them to play in the mud.
Good luck and your best bet is to do some test drives.

Are you set on buying new? If not, Jeep Grand Cherokees have hit a fairly good glut of saturation and the prices are fairly good on a 98-99 truck. Having driven both, it's no where near the disco, obviously, but I've had some good fun in mine and it does well in the snow.

Forget the X-Terra. I enjoy seeking them out in the parking lot and parking next to them for the fun of it. :-) The irony being, a new X-Terra cost a good deal more than my 97 Disco.

If you have to ask, chances are you arent maximizing the offroad capabilities of the Disco and could get away with just about anything 4x4. I've owned alot of 4x4s for my age and the Disco is fantastic, but for 90% of the time, a solid framed part time 4x4 would be OK as well. I had a 96 Nissan 4x4 truck that I took all over the darn place, not rock crawling, but at least 2k miles in baja, all over the mud in Louisiana and lots of beach driving in Texas and Virginia. It did just fine and got 18-19mpg on the road, and didnt leak. I hate IFS rigs, but hey, for basic wheeling, not a big deal, but with that said, I'm glad I can afford not to have to go back. I'd choose the Exterra over the Jeep, get japanese reliability if you are going to be limited to IFS...and a much better rear axle. The 233mm is real stout, much better than the Dana 30 or 35 in a Jeep. Up front, the 200mm does the trick just fine as well.

If you can afford the payment of a new Xterra or jeep or freelander you can afford to maintain a paid off disco. sounds like you got ripped pretty hard for a few things at the dealer, it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg, $900 02 sensor could have been a $100-200 DIY job.

Rob remember he is in Canada so those are canadian prices. So that $900 dollars of work up there is something like $550 worth of work here. Yes he could do it cheaper if he did it himself.

The LIBBY sucks.
And I drive a Jeep.
If you are being given the Disco, then the $$ you spend maintaining it will still be less than a new Libby or X payment.
And as Ho will tell ya, and I agree, the disco has style. I love my Jeep, but the disco is cool as hell man.

You will never get the off road performance out of a Liberty or X-Terra without spending a bundle in upgrades. Even then neither will be as strong as the Discovery. The Liberty is not even in the same ballpark as the X-Terra, which looks like a Hot Wheels toy you can buy at the toy store. If you have to make a decision, take the Liberty. If you want a solid performer that can take the punishment of off road abuse, take the Discovery. I guarantee that if you fart in the X-Terra off road, you will snap it in two. Take a look at some of the photos on this site. Now try to find any other vehicle (besides a Hummer) that even comes close.

I had an Xterra for 2 1/2 years and loved it. Went to Moab 3 times with it, Colorado, and all kinds of places in the PNW. It's downfall is the IFS but it does sit on a sturdy truck frame.
It just depends on the kind of wheeling you do I guess. You put a good driver behind the wheel of an Xterra with light mods (tires, supsension), and it will have no problem keeping up with a stock or even slightly moded Disco.
I just went to Moab last month and met up with a buddy that has an Xterra. We ran Golden Spike and the ONLY place he needed help was at the Golden Crack where he just tossed in 1 tire to get across. I have seen people with solid axles throw in more than that to get through.

get a toyota tacoma with the TRD package and a bedcap. Toyotas are tough and have good reputation. I almost got one then I found my rover.

jeez guys. he knows his rover will get him laid. it's just the difference between having two girls at once vs. one. sure, one girl is nice, but two is better. kind of like a disco; the xterra or the jeep will get you to her house, but the disco makes sure that her 'best' friend is there when you pull in (NPI). :)

here's my advice- buy a car that you like and pay your payment on that. and when you want to get laid/go wheelin' take the disco out. :)

What about a regular jeep with a hardtop?
Cheap and can get you anywhere!
It's not a rover but let's face the facts: It is very capable and buying new it would save a lot of $ on repair bills.

I think I would take this over an exterra, liberty, or Freelander.

Of the 4 metioned above, which is going to be the most capable and get you the most (.)(.)?
