I am set to replace my Serpentine Belt and I have searched back through the archives and saw the routing diagram. It all looks very simple, but I have a couple of questions: Where is the belt tensioner? How does it loosen? Once the belt is replaced, how much should the tensioner be tightened? Thank you very much in advance. John [email protected] |

On that diagram it is #1. Get a breaker bar ot torque wrench and a 14mm socket. Put on and turn right and it will loosen. Once you get it off one pulley the rest can be taken off. It automaticly tightens when you let it go after putting the new belt on. A hint on replacing is to keep it off the alternator pulley but route the rest. Then turn the tensioner and slip it onto that alt. pulley. BTW, I had a Dayco 5070885 belt shread apart some and take out the expansion tank, so for it is worth the cost of a genuine part. Should only be $25. pwc |

Peter is right about the alternator, it is about the only way to not drive yourself nuts! The factory belt is made by Gates. I don't have the number handy. What kind of condition is your tensioner bearing in? As cheap as they are, why not replace it while you're at it (there I go again!)? Paul |

How can you tell if your Serpentine belt is loose. If it is loose how would you tighten it? (Sometimes when I accelerate I have a very slight hum from around the alternator.) |

FYI - so called "factory or genuine" belts are manufactured by the low bidder that year/contract - Gates, Pirelli, Dayco, etc have all supplied the much vaunted "genuine" belts - LOL Bill |

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Yeah, that's it. Couldn't figure out how to get those little groves and ridges to match up so I just left half of it hanging off. Yeahhhh.....sure. And the old belt that I put back on...I put that one on wrong too?? Then why hasn't it busted? pwc PS I'm pretty sure the radiators for the 87 and 89 RRC are the same. But I also found one on eBay "new" for $125. Have you got the truck yet? |

havent picked it up yet as it doesn't run, so it will be a this weekend. last was pouring rain and we didn't get the tow dolly till after 5, and i aint towing this blob in the rain , at night, with no harness ..... that's reserverd for early saturday mornings with a partly cloudy sky and breezy 50 deg. once i get it removed, i'll check it out and determine what it's worth. i'm thinking somewhere between $25 and $124 rd |
