Was hoping I wouldn't have to ever deal with this, but some Jerk-off keyed the hood of my disco (right above the "Land" stickers). If this happened when off-road, I wouldn't care nearly as much. It's just the fact that some Jackass purposely dug into my car. My truck is black and the scratch is about 6 inches long (kinda deep but not to the metal). Any advise? I don't want to have the whole hood redone. Thanks, Rich |

If it didn't get through the black paint you can get some compound and buff the scratches out. I think Dupont N0 7 is widely availible. After you use No7 follow it up with a fill and glaze (usually billed as a clear coat safe scratch and haze remover) to remove the scratches put in by No 7. After that hit it with some good wax and you should be fine. If its through the paint and down to the primer, you have no choice but to touch up paint it. |

hmmm,, sounds like Rich was playin'like he was one of dukes of hazard county and the rivet on his jeans dug in.. rookie mistake but can happen to the best of us. they have those paint colored wax/polishes at most auto parts stores. they've worked for me in the past but the car wasn't much special, so you might want to try the other guys methods. if you are looking for a real good finish |

This isn't the answer you want, but if you live or work in an urban area, just wait for the next act of vandalism. Usually the body shop will fix the scratch for about 50% or less of the typical cost since they've already mixed the paint. My Disco II was keyed within one week of purchase and then the rear window smashed and roof dented by a bat wielding vandle two years later (and this is in a nice part of town) -- now its all fixed. |

What is it with Disco hoods? Somebody keyed mine a couple of years ago, a nice elaborate pattern. My only consolation is that if I had to pick a panel for it to happen to (other than the roof) it would be the hood. The body shop did a great job. Can't tell it from the other panels. Trevor |

Someone keyed my '97 Honda Prelude when it was about a month or so old. They broke into all the other cars around it, but my friend had installed my alarm and put my L.E.D.'s where they were very very visible. Anyhow, I would have rather had a smashed window and a missing radio. They ran a key down the driver's side about 4ft. long. My car was dark green and that scratch looked like hell. Anyhow, now to the point of my post here, I used that stuff they used to advertise on tv, GS27 scratch remover, and it worked very well. It made the scratch non-existant in the areas where it wasn't to the metal, and overall made it un-noticeable. I say go for the amazing GS-27 scratch remover, I bought mine at Target for around 8 bucks if I'm remembering correctly, but that was 5 years ago. If you ever did find the vandal, you could use the tube of GS27 to shove directly up his ass just before you spray painted his eyeballs and ripped off his toe-nails with rusty pliars.. |

i did a super multi-coat green over black with pearl and metal flake paint job on a mustang when I was senior in highschool. the color was bright silver green in the light and black in the low light. the second day out with it some ass holes tossed a couple buckets of paint over it while we watched a girls track meet. there always have been and always will be shitheads in this world |

Sounds like Minneapolis. A lot of SUVs are getting keyed and antennas ripped off here around college campuses. I guess the little communist fuckers don't like our "evil gas guzzlers". Glad that I live in the country. |

Happened to us also. We used 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. It has no abrasive or silicone but it works really well. It will brake the edges of the scratch and blend it into the rest of the car. While you are about it, do the whole car with the hand glaze and you will be amazed at the results. It removes surface marks where paint from another vehicle has come off onto your side panel or side mirrors. I found the product while at a BMW paint and panel shop, it's one of their most used products. www.worst4x4.freeservers.com |

I was in the detail business for six years, and have seen alot. Watch out for the scratch removing pastes, and touch up paints. The first will wear off and the second (if not done by a professional)could look worse than the scratch itself.Don't try to buff it out. No compound can mend it if its more than a hairline in the clearcoat. The only time buffing works on a major scratch is when the paint is a basecoat (this was common on older vehicles, thats why they faded so quickly)Nonetheless, if the scratch is below the base coat (the colour)and to the primer you are out of luck.Either try a touch up painter like Colours on Parade or have the part repainted at a body shop. Watch out! Make sure the body shop takes the bonnet off to repaint it, most are lazy and will leave you with overspray all over the vehicle. If they do, I recommend claying the vehicle. You can do it yourself and it will look great. Go to McGuires (I problably mispelled it)website to get more info on the claybar and lubricant. However, just be careful. Don't go and run a highspeed buffer and compound at 3000 rpm. It won't work and you will burn the paint.Remember, only fine hairlines come out. What happens is that the paint, which is in three layers (primer, basecoat, and clearcoat), cannot cross the divide of a layer above it. In other words, don't expect the base, on either side of the scratch, to fill the gap, when it is under a layer of clearcoat. Good luck! And don't let the body shop screw up.You may be able to find a bonnet with the same colour in a spare yard for a comparable price. Hope it turns out fellow Rover owner. |
