I'm really hoping someone can help with this before I need to call a tow truck! Things were going just fine, but when I started my car and tried to drive away, I could not get the car out of park... No matter what I did. I tried taking the shifter assembly apart to see what was happening, but did not get too far. I did se a "tab" lifting up when I pushed the button on the gear shift in, but could not budge it out of park. Yes, I did have my foot on the brake. Right now, I'm thinking that it's the safety interlock switch... I'm not closing the circuit despite my foot being on the brake. Is there a way to disconnect/override this? Right now, the vehicle is stuck in a parking lot, and I'd do almost anything to get it to work. THANKS. |

Could be the brake light fuse as well. You might wanna try stoping the pedal. Sometimes that works. Kyle |

Thanks guys... I checked, and the brake lights are working at best, intermittently. Unfortunately, I can't find the part in New Orleans, and the dealer is closed until Monday. So I'll let you know how it works out. I did see two switches down there. One is clearly the brake light switch, with two wires heading to it. The other has four wires. Any idea what that's for? |

The other switch is most likly the "shut off" for the cruise control system. -John |

Now I'm really curious... Tried taking the part with me to NAPA. No Joy. As far as the other switch being the cruise control... the one I grabbed had two wires and a vacuum hose, which I thought was the cruise shut off... did I grab the wrong one? |

Don - This is pretty weird -- I'm in NOLA as well and had the same exact thing happen to my 96 this weekend. Dealer has the part -- I just got one this morning. 42 bucks. |

Don, it is your brake switch. fuck the lights, they may work or may not work, the switch operates two separate circuits. and you can't get it from anywhere but the dealer, at least, not from your autozone or napa. if you're electrically-minded, you can pull the switch, figure out which pins get closed or open when you push the button, and rig the jumper wires. i've done it once, but it was long ago so i can't help you with any meaningful advice. if you search the archives, somebody posted which pins/wires need to be shorted to trick the transmission into thinking that the brake pedal is depressed. peter |

Okay, Ive done all the relevant key word searches and pulled nowt. Im keen to get to the switch with the two wires and the vacuum thats Don mentioned cause ive checked the rest of the vacuum for my CC and it seems ok yet it still doesnt work. Where do I find this thing? Simply on the other end of the brake pedal arm? Is it a big job anyone? |

I had a similar problem... When I pulled the shifter apart, I found not one, but two Bic lighters stuffed in there! You can't imagine how difficult it is to extricate a Bic lighter from your shifter. While it is very likely to be an electrical issue, the possibility of mechanical interference might bear checking out. The truly funny thing is that my wife is the best lighter thief in the world. I can't figure out how a lighter spent enough time free of her grasp to escape to the shifter. |

vacuum? how the vacuum comes into play here? Thom, i believe you, the switch is made in the U.S. by TRW. Cross-listing the bugger is a big deal - if you can pull and post the part #, it would be awesome. Have to say, you found a really intelligent person at pep boys. Peter, it's mounted on the brake pedal (usually the switch is black in color), with two clips on its sides. two minutes to replace if you know where to look. peter |

Matt, So YOU'RE the guy who beat me to the dealer by about 30 minutes this morning! That was their last one. They scraped up a used one, and I was able to use that to get it in to gear... only problem was, on that switch, the brake lights were always on... Called Rover's North... they were out of stock too. Apparently there's a backorder as Rover switches to Ford's warehouse system. Fortunately, British Pacific had one... Number stamped into the side of the one I took out is AMR 2010 TRW. Thanks for all your help. I just need to clean up the mess I made, and I can go from there... |

In your workshop manual, it's called the 'Stop Lamp Switch'. I found mine at local parts store for around $30. The other switch on the brake pedal called the 'Brake Switch Vent Valve', that vents the vacuum pressure, interrupts the voltage flow and turns of the vacuum pump and releases the pressure on the vacuum solenoid valve. in other words, stomp on brake, cruise control goes off. |
