Could someone please advise me what determines the startup idle speed on my 96 fuel injected engine. V8 3.9.
Since fuel injection motors do not have a 'choke" what determines the idle speed at start up?
When my Disco is cold it takes form 40 - 60 secs before the idle reaches normal operating speed. I don't think it could be a coolant sensor as it is too short a time. I was wondering if the Airflow sensor could be playing up, How does one check this?
My plugs and ignition wires are only 2 months old.
Any Ideas would be appreciated,
thanks.

Sounds like stepper motor related, as he is the one who lifts idle when cold. But he gets signal from coolant sensor via ecu, so ... Check coolant sensor resistance cold - should be > 3k IIRC, going down to 300 ohms hot. There is also a fuel temp sensor on the rail, same values. Clean the stepper anyway, and the seat it seals on. Reseat sensor connectors also.
