I have a recurrent problem with my 2000 td5 Disco. When the ignition is first turned on, the instrument panel auto transmission mode lights (S and M) occasionally come on together and flash. There's a (BRIEF!!!!) specific reference to this problem in the Owner's Guide .... "if the S&M lights come on together, stop immediately and seek urgent assistance".

It happened the first time on the way home from picking up the vehicle brand new. It's happened a further 6 times over 2 years and 70,000 kms. The vehicle goes into "limp home" mode but is fundamentally unusable for a while. (It has always resolved itself after a short period of time).

It's been into the dealer each time for repairs. Mostly they tell me it's a faulty earth connection - they also told me that the problem would resolve when they replaced the entire ABS computer under dealer recall last year. Still no joy ... it happened again last week and was taken into the dealer for a further 5 hours (allegedly) of tinkering with the earth wires. "Oh yes ... we found dirty connections, but have fixed it now - you should have no further problems!"

Well ... GOLLLLLLY ... when I turned on the ignition in the dealer's carpark ... there they were, flashing away together. The good ol' S&M lights.

Latest news this morning is that they have contacted Landover Australia who say .... replace the XYZ switch ... (that's right - the XYZ switch).

I don't want to sound unappreciative of the efforts being put into my vehicle under warranty, but I'd prefer to have it fixed and no problems than endless apologies and repeat trips to the workshop.

Anyone else had any similar experiences or have any suggestions?

This is most likely the issue.

All this reminds me of the Woody Allen sketch where he gets into a talking elevator (lift in OZ)that stops between floors and accuses him of abusing the toaster and other appliances. At least with my series 1 I can burn the toast and not have to "limp home".

I am not a Luddite but, spending most of my day sitting in front of a computer, it is reassuring to know that I can drive home from work in the Tdi knowing that it will not hang because I haven't loaded the latest MS service pack. All I have to worry about is that the head has been tightened down properly...that is enough to worry about.

Whilst towing my boat with my td5 auto recently I was stopped at traffic lights on a hot day facing up hill. The transmission oil overflowed onto exhaust and road.Lost drive completely.Towed away boat and all!
Dealer topped up oil and tested and appears ok.
Anyone else experienced this problem?
