How do I grease the U joints on a Disco 2? There are no zerc fitting on the U Joint. Do I have to get zerc fittings fitted on the joint?

The DII factory joints sometimes come from the factory without provisions to grease. This is likely the reason for the premature failures we read of. You get ten points for trying.

You will need to replace them with u-joints with provisions for greasing. NAPA has them, but keep in mind those for the front may well be different from the rear driveshaft. If you go with the NAPA u-joints, buy a set of shorter Zerks, otherwise with heavy articulation, you may bust a zerk off due to yoke interference.

So how would you grease a U joint with out Zerk fittings? Can you grease it at all?

yes you can but you need to disasemble them so if your going that far its just better to replace them with ones that can be greased

also if your really motivated you can drill and tap the center of one of the caps and install a flat slotted pin zerk into it but once again your talking about a shit load of work to keep a throw away part .

moral= bite the bullet change the joints

Yeah, what Musky said.

Notice I didn't say to replace the driveshafts! LOL!

Before tearing into it, buy a handful of cheap 9/16" end wrenches and grind them down so they fit the bolts on the flanges. It will save you lots of swearing and save the beer for when the job is done.

Also, buy 12 or 16 3/8-24 nyloc nuts for reassembly. You can get away with re-using them once-maybe. But, if you aren't under your truck on a regular basis, it is better advised to just replace them and be done with it, rather than worrying about whether they have loosened and are gonna tear out your transfer case, cats and oil pan.

Yes, I have taken the CB route and gotten lucky, but for $0.25 each, it really is cheap enough to do right the first time.

The rear u-joint has a zerk on mine, there's a rotoflex at the diff. The front has a zerk at the diff and a fitting thread for the telescope, but the frickin' DC at the t-case is "sealed for life". Makes no sense whatsoever.

Seems there was a thread a little while back about the dealer replacing the u-joints with Zerk versions under warranty if the customer complained of "vibrations".

From experience swapping the U-joints in the DC is a PITA. There is a stupid set of needles in the joint between the two u joints which I could not figure how to reassemble. I would not take it apart until it fails.

I just finished replacing the non-greasable ujoints on the D2. I may have lost one of the needles that you're talking about, Ron. May have always had that gap, not sure. Any idea how much problem this may cause?

I'm thinking it might be better to just put the zerk on the existing ujoints, especially on a newer, cleaner driveshaft.

"Any idea how much problem this may cause?"

Damned if I know. I also would like to know how it would be possible to get them in there in the first place! My gut says it serves no critical purpose but on the otherhand I worry that it will cause an out of balance situation.

In any case post back when you find out if it works ok. I am using you as a guinea pig to see if I need to take it apart again. :)

Well, I had a chance to drive the truck on the highway today. Even after all the hammering and tinkering, it's drives smoother at high speeds than it did with the old u joints.

So, most likely my old u joints were going bad, even though they seemed to move fine in my hand. Plus, I haven't noticed any effects of the apparent missing bearing needle in that center joint. I'll let you know if it blows up the next 1000 miles.
