My 96 Disco just started to whine today. It seems to be coming from somwhere in the engine compartment. Does anybody have any idea what it could be? Problems coming? Please help! Thanks! Jeremy |

By the way, this whine is present at both parked idling and driving. Thanks! |

Does it vary w/ engine speed? Does it occur more when turning the steering wheel? Alternators and power steering pumps have a tendency to whine.... If you don't have an engine stethoscope, you can use a really long screwdriver... hold the handle to your ear, and touch the other end to different engine parts to isolate the source of the sound. Good luck, -L |

What Leslie said - could also be the idler tensioner pulley - common for that bearing to go on both D1 and D2 Also - how old is your belt? Bill |

I went back out this morning to listen to the noise, but it did not appear upon start-up. I am thinking that it will come back once the engine warms up. We have only had this truck since October and this is the belt it came with. It doesn't appear to be cracking. Is the idler tensioner an expensive item? easy DIY job? I will try the screwdriver idea if the whine comes back. Based on the lack of information regarding this whine, do you think the disco is safe to be driven? Thanks for the help! Jeremy |

No problem on driving it! I lived with it for about 25K because I was too lazy to change a bearing in the idler pulley. If it is that - a $9.00 Napa bearing will solve the problem. See cross-ref section for p/n If you're unsure of the serpentine belt history - change it - doesn't cost much to do. No need for a genuine belt - A Dayco/Goodyear/Gates from your local autoparts store will do fine. Bill |
