And is it necessary to replace the plastic bushing?

Ensure engine is not running becuase if the sensor connection is disturbed when "active" then a fault code will be set (which can only be reset by "Testbook"). Dilligently clean the area around where the sensor is to stop dirt falling back in the hole when the sensor comes out and it also makes it easier to see what you are doing. Carefully remove sensor by prying with screwdrivers either side of sensor - DO NOT PULL ON CABLE - IT IS FRAGILE and UNREPAIRABLE! There is no servicing of them. Clean it with a rag. Ensure the sensor hole is clear of all dirt and slide sensor back into hole and tapping gently all the way home with a piece of wood on the back of the sensor - AGAIN BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE CABLE (also whilst the sensor is out, do not wiggle the cable where it joins the sensor as although it is multi-stranded wire they get hot and the wires become brittle!) Next time you drive the car the sensor resets itself. If the ABS light remains on after travlleing at greater than 10mph then a sensor could stuffed. To determine which one you put a multimeter across the connection to each sensor - just follow the sensor back to each connection. The resistance is about 1Mohm +-50ohm. I have had 2 go on me and due to the cost of original replacements I have bought used ones from a auto wrecker (checking the resistance of course). Good luck

needlenose hose pliers work great for removing the sensors. Just make sure you get a size that is close to the diameter of the sensor body.

You may also want to get a tube of the special Wabco grease for the sensor, and replace the bronze bushing if it is correded.
