Hey folks, My name is Armando and I own a '98 Discovery. I got a '98 Disco with automatic transmission that decided it doesn't want to drive forwards any longer, although it happily will drive in reverse. While leaving a gas station I engaged drive and drove out normally then suddenly realized that I wasn't getting any power to the wheels... no cluncks or anything to indicate obvious mechanical failure - drive simply became ineffectual. When engaging reverse I get the usual friendly clunk (I used to get that when engaging drive). I played around with the transfer case engaging high and low and it appears to be working normally in reverse but again D-3-2-1 continue to be inopperational. As a possible hint... the transmission had been experiencin a problem "sticking" in 1st gear when cold. but this problem would sort itself out after the truck warmed up. Hoping you might give me some advice before I take it to a dealer - the way someone takes their pet lamb to the slaughter house. Update - The guy at the garage says the problem is the automatic clutch - But then how come reverse works? Thanks in advance for your words of wosdom, Armando Dubai - UAE |

Hi Armando What the heck is the automatic clutch? Try this - switch into the 'manual' setting, and see if you can select 2-3-D and go anywhere. Unless you do this, it is going to try to engage 1st gear. That way you might at least be able to get it to move. I'm afraid you probably do have a bit of transmission rebuilding to do... |

Manual setting? Not something my 98 Disco I has. Selecting 1,2,3, or D just limits to that gear, it's still going to engage 1st gear initially, no way to bypass it that I know of. |

The D2 has a manual mode button, which (in low range) allows you to fix the gear to whatever, even from stand still. It may skip gears to get there. |

Pugsly, I think you are speaking of the newer LR with a Sport and Manual setting. I belive the 98 Disco I does not have this option. My 2000 DII has sport available in Hi and Manual available in low gears. Is this what you are talking about. Armondo, sorry to hear about your troubles. To have severe trans troubles it is posable for only reverse to work. The trans, from a drivers point of veiw, is strait forward; it works or it don't. Bring to a good shop and keep your fingers crossed and don't get an automatic clutch, this I have never heard off. |

Yeah, that must be it. I wasn't certain if it was on the DI, knew it was on the DII and RR - it is actually a really useful function, to be able to force the transmission to start in a higher gear with less torque. |

No love, my Disco's automatic transmission doesn't doesn't have the Manual option. When I typed "Automatic Clutch", I was actually refering to the Clutch of my Automatic transmission. Clearly I have no idea how it works, but the mechanic says it's the clutch that gave way and that the Automatic has separate clutches for forward and reverse. This doesn't seem right as in my mind that would require two flywheels, two engines... *sigh* I guess the language barrier didn't help. Anyway, I haven't let the mechanic touch the car but I guess I'll need to have him flat bed it out to the nearest Dealer - 100+ miles away. Armando Dubai - UAE |

Put in a rebuilt transmission - as long as it is rebuilt from a reputable Rover supplier. If you trust the mechanic where you are now, you could even have him do it - don't know that there would be any real advantage to going to the dealership (unless they warrantee it). It is not that complex a job, just a lot of heavy lifting bcause you have to drop the transfer case to get at the transmission. Good luck! |

Armando: Automatic transmissions have "clutch packs" which are packs of alternating steel discs and friction discs. These discs are very thin, are about 6 inches in diameter and have a central hole about 4 inches in diameter. A pack has about 7 to 9 "clutches" or "clutch discs". These are engaged by hydraulic pressure from the pump in the automatic transmission. An automatic transmission also has friction "bands". Yes, it is these clutches and bands that wear out, they are the "soft parts" designed to wear out. |

What do you know!? Jay, That's what the guy was trying to explain - each gear had it's own "clutch". I'm having the guy take a stab at it...he's charging me about $10/hour for labor so even if it doesn't work out, I guess just getting the transmission down before taking it to the rover dealer will save me some money - haven't been able to find a Rover specialist out here... I'll have to post some pictures on my website. Thanks everyone for your help... I think I'm in very good shape now. |
