Primary reason - It costs a ton. Secondary reason - It costs a ton. Tertiary reason - Does not provide what you think it might, particularly for the cost. |

If you're looking for one, I know of one for sale. Came off a D90, doesn't have a ton of miles on it, and the owner is looking to deal. -P |

There is a reason aftermarket superchargers void warranties on new cars, they are really hard on engines. As for the disco needing help, it isn't supposed to be a fast car. |

that is why I'm buying a land crusier series 80 with 37's and a TRD supercharger. nothing beats a straight six with a superchager. discos' are just a pain in the ass, nothing can be done to them expect the average omu suspension and 30 inche tires. |

"nothing can be done to them expect the average omu suspension and 30 inche tires." you obviously don't know much, it might be harder than with most other vehicles but plenty more than 2 inch lift and 30 inch tires can be done. |

ignorant ass! toyota are awesome...but there i sno need to bash a disco... i think i speak for all when i say everybody is entitled to there opinion..but last time i checked...this was a disco board....so go find a toyota board if your going to bash the disco... thanks ta ta now on topic... from my own personal research i have found it ain't so good to up the pressure in the rover cylinders...but i have found that a place called East Coast Rovers is awesome for engine swap outs and tuning the rover v8's...its not cheap, but i wouldn't say it is totally unreasonable...just depends on how bad you want the extra horses...go check them out: http://www.eastcoastrover.com/RoverV8.html peace |

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one! I asked a simple question if anyone put a supercharger on their disco, not if it costes too much or if it doesn't work. |

MORON! Pete's (Mike's?) original post was:
Quote:I was wondering if any one put a supercharger on the disco and why haven't I seen more people do it.
How about cost and whether the gains justify the cost/wear on the engine...those appear to be pretty clear reasons why you haven't seen more people do it. Or are you telling us you really didn't want this advice? |

Wow, this seems like such a rehashed issue. But I must put it in perspective, I have been lurking and posting for over a year. So, from what I have read and the research that I have done I can offer this advice. Yes, for me the disco could use a little more umph for everyday driving, hence the 4.6 offered for year 2003. When offroading in low gear, it jumps like a billygoat, but we drive onroad also. I think that is forgotten sometimes. So on to the supercharger, it has been done and it works, but they are in my opinion relatively higher maintenace and more difficult to tune correctly. For the same money and power gains, you can go an easier route with the 4.6 conversion. Check out RPI's website(Under resources/vendors) Lots of info, you have to get used to their website but a very good site nontheless. You should expect with a little tuning at least 240HP and close to 300 lbs./ft of torque. Very respectable and it wouldn't need the relatively extra maintenace a supercharger demands. I will be doing the conversion in about a year when my warranty expires. Are you deciding between a cruiser and a rover? -Chris |

Here we go again! I live in Oz and have two discos. A 1991, 3 door, 4.6L hi compression motor with manual trans and a 1995 5 door with a stroked 4.7L fitted with a vortech V2 supercharger. The vortech supercharger replaced an Eaton unit purchased in 1996 from Rimmer engineering in Colorado Springs,.... I love supercharging! Some facts: 1. Don't listen to the crap that there is not a noticeable improvement in performance. 2. Yes! It does cost and you need to set it up properly with a engine management unit such as Motec or Haltech to run it, so forget going cheap by trying to do the job with a chip upgrade. 3. If you decide to buy an Ex Rimmer unit (probably an Eaton) you will need some form of method to cool the air intake which on these units can be very high for three reasons, engine heat transfer to the SC, hot intake air already in the engine bay(a snorkel will help), plus the extra heat produced during compression. Water injection will help, and, depending on how much money you have, you could ceramic coat your headers as well as the SC base plate. If you chose not to cool the incoming air, you will in time destroy your engine. A centrifugal SC such as a vortech or Procharger can be intercooled; provide greater PSI boost than a screw type SC, but do have a down side. If you install on of these to a manual trans you will experience a little lag at take off, if you have an auto you will not experience lag. If you decide to install supercharging to a 4.6 or bigger as I have done, then you will need to beef up your manual gearbox/auto transmission and fit maxi-drive axles. If you do not do these things properly, best carry a bucket with you to pick up the pieces. In short, if you have a standard 4.0L, and you want more grunt that's affordable, stay away from screw type SC such as Eaton, Whipple and fit a Vortech, Procharger, Powerdyne etc with an intercooler (contact Spearco) and a good management system (You won't need Motec for this set up, Haltec will do)and you will simply love driving your Discovery. Your other option as suggested by Chris is fit a 4.6 |

BTW Pete, there is more you can do to a disco than OME suspension and 30 inch tyres. We have already covered supercharging and stroking which will take your horsepower rating to 290+ at the rear wheels, but consider some other options:- Larger and stronger axles (Maxi-Drive or McNamara) Maxi-Drive strenthened axle housing and 1/2 thick diff housing. Improved aftermarket sound systems and gauges such as autometer or dakota digital. Underdrive (crawler) gears by Maxi Drive or Ashcroft engineering or perhaps you would like to check out RPI engineering, Overfinch, JE Engineering or Great Basin Rover to see the multitude of aftermarket goodies on offer. How about a PTO winch that runs off your transfer case. With one of these babies you can winch backwards as well as forwards, not to mention drive agricultural equipment such as pumps etc. Don't want a PTO winch! then how about a Milemarker hydraulic winch or perhaps a Warn. Oh! did I forget? You could also consider a Maxi Drive Axle portal 'drop box' kit, this gives you a 5 inch lift without changing anything on your suspension and you don't have to trim your guards, change your brake cables or fuel lines, extend and balance your drive shafts or cut away parts of your rear door. You can even throw away your sway bar disconnects (if you,ve got them fitted) Hmm,I wonder what size tyre you could fit? Bit bigger than 30 inch I bet. I could go on like this for ages but I don't want to get off-side with the rest of the guys. The bottom line is, it all costs money. If you've got it you can do nearly anything to your Disco. And you are right, because of its extra weight a 80 series landcruiser does need supercharging to get it to move. |

FYI, I have 97 Supercharged Disco. With the regular maintainance on the supercharger and regular oil changes and plugs and filter. Had a head job done took care of the Valve problems associated with these v8's. My truck is reliable and has enough power to go up the mountain and the nice extra kick in the pants is nice. Had my ECU reporgrammed so that the air/fuel ratio works with the supercharger. Go ahead and bash all you want but for me it has worked fine and reliable for 6 cross country trips and it's seventh this Christmas time. I wouldn't take it cross country in the middle of winter if I didn't trust it and and felt it was extremely reliable. Just my .02 cents worth. jim |

Jim, I'm not knocking. I'm just not skilled enough mechanically to manage a supercharger. On the other hand, if I was able to select between regular aspirastion and boosted aspiration... I think that would be the best of both worlds. Kinda like MAD MAX's vehicle. Damn I love that movie...Remember the scene where he first pops on the compressor and the gas guage starts moving...man I love horsepower! I think I'll pop in that DVD tonight. Yea. I know, enough rambling... -Chris |

FYI Chris, They got that shot by parking the car on the back of a flat bed truck. Then at the allotted time they simply started the engine to give the impression the blower was switchable - which of course it cant be. Pete - "..last of the V8 interceptors..." |

Peter, Its the first one, titled "MAD MAX", imagine that. Its "70's quirky" but I think it holds up. The second and third move towards total anarchy, whereas the first has more of a "western" feel(Outlaws vs. Rangers). You gotta dig an Aussie western! -Chris |

The movie w/ Chuch Norris was Lone Wolf McQuade (possible sp on the McQuade part) and the part where he digs himself out of being buried by the drug dealers with the supercharger is hilarious... I think the next line of controversy should be "how hard would it be to twin turbo a Disco?" That should yank quite a few chains and I'm sure the Toyota fans will chime in with the I-force drag "tundra"... |

Hi Ali, Regarding the axle portal drop boxes. This is a good news, bad news post. The drop boxes are being manufactured by Maxi-drive engineering here in Oz. You need a set for each wheel and basically each box consists of 4 gears arranged in a pattern simular to a cross, that is, a 23 tooth input gear at the top supported on both sides by an idler gear, with a 32 tooth output gear at the bottom with a stub shaft to which is attached your standard disc and calipers. The slim compact design increases the vehicle track by only 170mm (6 1/2 inches). the castings have ambidexter caliper mounting with a fitting for a breater line. The case is sealed and oil bath lubed. The good news: Besides the 5 inch lift this set up will give you, there is also a 1.3:1 reduction in the drive train which means 30% less strain on the axles, CV joints and diffs. The bad news: These babies will cost you around US $5000 fitted to your truck. |

Roand, Thanks for the info. With this much gearing, how will this effect, in your opinion, hwy cruising and such? Seems to me it's a lot of gears moving around at high speed and probably not a good idea. Do you know if anyone who has done this install? Thanks. |

Yes, the install has been done to a number of vehicle here in Oz and it's a very simple bolt on. One guy as I understand it, has purchased 3 complete sets. I should point out that this is a new product from Maxi-drive and the original test units were trialed in France. I have not fitted them yet as I'm waiting for the price to come down which it eventually will. With regards to highway use, I guess that your top speed would be reduced due to the new gear ratio but your gain would be off road, when your in low range. There could be a whine at speed (just a guess), but I haven't heard any reports about it as yet. |

Hell-if your going to spend that much $ then why keep the stock rover axles/diff? For that much you could probably find a set of Unimog 404's. That'd give you a practically unbreakable set of axles w/portals. I only know of one gear ratio-7.54:1 (thats 3.54 diff and a 2.13 reduction in the hubs). There are some super strong aftermarket axles avail at www.killeraxles.com for the 404's. Unfortunately, my family would rather eat than have portals so I'll stick to rover axles w/out portals. Does anyone know where I can get an original "undubbed" australian version of Mad Max w/out "american" accents? My 2 cents- GregH |

I looked at a Mog 404 yesterday that was for sale. It was missing the rear bed so I got a birds eye view of the torque tube arrangement. Frankly, converting a torque tube design to fit the LR vehicle seems like a lot of work and money! I'd be more inclined to go with Maxidrive's unit that features "plug and play" into a Disco or RRC. They did all the design work so all you do give them your wallet! |

Along with the Sunamiturbo blowoff valve sound, you should also fit those fan belts that simulate the whistling sound of a supercharger, only never let yourself be caught as a front runner at the lights. By the look of it, you could probably wire your car alarm into it as well. |
