my '95 disco I has always had stiff steering since I owned it. replaced damper, PS pump, tie rod ends for drag link, and PS box. still is not right! with the damper off things are a little better, but nothing like my D2 was.

just so you know, it is an "even" stiffness and doesn't have much "return" on the wheel.

is there anything else I can look at? I am open to all ideas at this point! my arms are getting tired driving this thing.

thanks for any and all suggestions...

lift the front wheels off the ground, and check it it turns freely. if not, you have some odd problem somwehere.

what size tires do you have and what pressure are they at? steering effort seems to increase significantly when pressure is low.

lifted the front off the ground. it turns easier (obviously since there is no resistance), but still not as easy as my D2 would when tires on the ground.

anyone with a D1 in SF city that'll let me see how their steering feels??

Derek, have you checked pre-load on your swivel balls?Your swivels have bearings which are adjusted with shims on top plate w 2 17mm bolts, there are only a few things that can cause this problem,i'm a land rover master tech,Brian.

Have you checked the u joints in the steering column? Thay can get stiff as the mileage goes up.
Mine wouldn't self centre when the car was cold, but Ok once the grease & crud warmed up a bit.

I haven't checked this, although the shop that did the PS box was going to look at it. how exactly do I check the pre-load?

Derek, the way i check swivel pre load is take off front wheels then disconnect tie rod ends from spindles so all you now have is the spindle swinging back and forth,if they are somewhat hard to move then this could be your problem, and yes i would definently check the steering shaft u joints,BRIAN.

Forgot to reply to u joints, you have to remove at least one end of steering shaft to check the joints, move them and see if one is binding,Brian.
