I was looking underneath my rover and on front of the bell housing there is a threaded hole that looks like it is about a 1/2 inch. This is on a ZF 4 speed. Should it have a bolt or not?

Thanks,

Manual Transmission? Is that where the wading plug is supposed to go?

Early auto units had these. Plug is for heavy water crossings and does not have it in place from the factory.

It is on an '89 RRC, so it is earlier...any idea where can pick up a plug?

Thanks,

On my 88RRC, I had a plug in the tool kit that came with the rig.

I sold my 88RRC, so I don't have the manual anymore to reference, but as I recall, you only use the plug when you are doing heaving wading. If it came from the factory out, I would leave it out for everyday use.

from somewhere:

The Fording Plug
(as in fording a river)
We all know our vehicles are built to cross raging rivers, deep soupy mud holes etc.. But, before we take the plunge you should always check water or mud depth, locate any hidden hazards and then install your fording plug.
The fording plug is used on all manual transmission Land Rover, to prevent water, mud or other contaminants from getting into the clutch and bell housing area, when fording. When not in use the plug is stored in a bracket mounted to the bell housing on a Series Land Rover and in the tool roll of a Defender or Discovery. It is important to remove the plug from the bell housing when you are not fording because the hole acts as a drain hole for any oil leaks. If the plug is left in place the backed up oil could contaminate the clutch disc.

Yeah, mine always had a dribble of oil coming out of it. Self lubricating fording plug. LOL

Same here. I'll look under the LRs tonight and let you know. Our RRs should have the same ZF trans and the 109 has a R380 manual.

Got to love the fact that they intended on the truck leaking oil from the factory so they had to install a drain
LOL

I believe this feature was deleted around 96 on the auto. A regular pipe plug from a hardware store would probably fit if you could determine the thread pitch. Maybe someone with a plug would measure the thread pitch for you and post it

every bell housing has some sort of drain plug... or weep hole.. auto matics its doesn't matter if it gets wet.. it just so you do not submerge a clutch on a manual... The only people who should be concerned about wading plugs are the manual transmission guys.. who should only install them while wading.. the whole should be left open for normal drainage of oil & debris..

Ed,
So are you saying that the plug isn't need on an auto even in deep wading?
