I posted this on Expedition Exchange yesterday but the "epicenter of all things rover" seems to have shifted back here and I figured I should post here too.

I want to add some protection to the front and rear diffs on a Discovery series II. I've heard some complaints about the SG diff guards only protecting from "head-on" impacts and I have seen some conflicting information from other manufacturers. Some say their guards fit D1 and D2, others say there is a difference between their D1 and D2 fit, and some just say Discovery. Im hoping for some input from D2 owners about what they actually have installed and any pros/cons.

Thanks,
Rick

check with RoversNorth. SG diff guard is not even comparable.

I really like the Southdown equipment for D2 skidplating etc.. although it makes $G look almost affordable..

The front diff is the most vulnerable spot on a Disco.

If you're just in mud, no, it won't help. If you ever go play on a rocky trail, it will save you.

Yes, there are many recorded cases of painful ouchies occurring from the lack of a front diff-guard.

If nothing else, get a front diff guard.

IMHO, YMMV....

"I have never heard of or seen a person dent a pumpkin.."

Then you don't wheel with the right people !

I can think of three in the last six months in the club here.

The rear is MUCH less common though.

sounds to me that phil here wheels with the big boys... big ass tires, so tall that their diff is halfway up to heaven. :)

diff guard is cheap insurance man. GET THEM!

I agree with the "cheap insurance" and was already set on getting some, just a question of what setup. I spend enough time in rocky places to warrant them even if I do (somehow) manage to avoid bashing them. Several people have said that a front guard from RoversNorth and a pinion guard from Rockware on the rear diff work well together on the DII. Limits most exposure unless I do something really stupid. :)

Any thoughts from the gallery?

Any recommendations for diff guards for a Disco II with ACE? I've been told by British Pacific that the standard ones for a DII won't work.

Has anyone used the Diff guard from DAP?
Their price is the best I have found.

Joe, I believe Bearmach makes that one. It looks fairly stout, I'd like to get my hands on one to try it out.

Yeah, Nathan's are Bearmach guards. He just seems to be having some trouble getting them in.

I just got a quote for a pair. Nathan said it would be $170, and they are Bearmach. He's just waiting for them to come in. I'm not sure what's up with the price difference.

Does RoversNorth make their own diff gards or are they reselling Bearmach? I know that you can't really tell from online pictures but the RN guards seem to be almost identical to the ones DAP is selling only the prices at RN are much higher.

This is ther RN front diff guard. This does not fit the rear, and I don;t think they have one for the rear. It is a sandwich design....

Why does discoweb have a 50kb limit on images? I can't downsize my image to fit that....

hmmmm, for some reason, I was thinking the Rover's North diff guards that fit the D2 were those big beefy bolt on ones ... (I think) like the pic in Doug Hormann's file (posted above - Dave). I haven't looked at any since last summer. Forgive me for asking stupid question, (my regular MO:)) but is the pic of the RN one above a weld on type?

oh, I forgot to mention, BTW, FWIW, ... I have $G diff guards front and back on my D2. They were on sale, I picked them up, and had them welded on while I was there. (I'm not allowed to use sharp pencils, sissors, tools with fire, things like that while unsupervised :))

That QT diff protector that Horness linked us to looks pretty nice - a little cushion for impacts. It's only about $65-70US + shipping. Here's the pic:

the RN one that i posted is not a weld on. just slips over and you tighten the bold. you could do some tack welding just to make sure it does not get knocked off on a trail though.

ps: kim you may want to get the scissors with rounded off edges. and walk......don't run.

Rockware makes something quite similar for the rear. This looks like the hookup for the front though.
