I've just ordered some Dunlop Radial Rover R/Ts in 235/85 16 and am going to have them put on on Friday. BTW I have an OME HD lift.

I'm going to try the fender relocation trick found at http://www.discoweb.org/rearfender/index.htm . Being a doofus, I can't even understand those simple directions. I originally understood that I was removing a piece of metal and then bending it into a different shape, but there doesn't seem to be a metal piece to remove.

So it seems that I need to find a piece of metal to bend into the right shape to place between the frame and the body?

Other questions:
- What do I need the hack saw for?
- How far out do I need to respace the fenders?

I need to do the work here which is about a 5 hour trip from where I'm having the tires put on so I kind of have to do it right without having the tires on the vehicle.

Andrew, keyword here is "mending brace". You can purchase the brace at Home Depot and use the hacksaw to cut it.

if you are careful and don't hit any speed bumps real fast you can put the tires on, make it home with no rubbing and then space the panels out at home.

Sorry Carter, but he can't do that. The LR Brotherhood dictates that "he who installs larger tires on his Disco shall find a trail and test the tires immediately after leaving the tire shop"

11th commandment I think it's called..

Thanks, John. I tried some other keywords but resorted to posting a new question eventually.

Carter: yes I could do that but the problem is, tires are being installed in Vancouver and "home" is Southern California so that's a long trip with a fully loaded vehicle...

Ahhhh, yes that is a long trip home. Never mind.

Andrew, I did not expect you to do a search on mending brace. The instructions should have been a little more specific for folks like you and I (or is it you and me???)... Doesn't matter..

Andrew, I hope you got a good deal on the tires cause that's a long way to go to purchase tires, isn't it?

Ohhhh, maybe you're bringing something else in the tires....huh? Come on, tell me ...tell me...

K.I.S.S.

Maybe I need to consider writing those instructions in Crayon.

LOL

The crayon idea might help for people like me. Yes I am incredibly clueless but at least I tried to research what I was doing before asking the questions...

To set the record straight, I'm up here anyways on my way back down to California. Tires here are C$165 installed vs. US$143 in San Diego for the same tire. So I'm saving around US$194 on a set of 5 tires before tax.

I just trimmed the end caps on an angle and bent in the lips around the rear fenders to see if that will do it before I start putting in spacers and all that. It should work for the pavement, at least.

And yes that IS equal in my tires ;-)

For a quick fix to help extend the fenders out to get you home, I used a very simple method that takes about ten minutes to install. I was short on time to bend the braces and was going to spend three days on the trails. The eleventh hour solution was as follows;

Find a scrap piece of 3/4" pine or cedar board

Cut into a piece 1" x 1 1/2"

Remove existing screw holding fender to mud flap bracket

Gently pull fender out

slide piece of wood between fender and bracket

Secure using 1/2" pan head screws and washers threw hole in fender and bracket

Fast fix that held up

I have had my 235x85's for almost a year and with the exception of a very small (about 1 inch) piece of fender I had to cut (on the underside lip not the inside lip in well) I have had no problems with rubbing except for the radius arms and the front endcaps. I only have MD's so I wouldn't freak out until you have to.
