Do you not have the hitch anymore or something? Because that is the best place.

it is an sd model w/ no hitch, believe me i would rather have the hitch but $250 is to much for a recovery point. the hitch is a last option.

oh, I didn't know they made any without hitches. The only thing I can tell you is that those "tie down points" attached to the frame back there (I'm assuming the DII has them also) are NOT acceptable recovery points, so..... you might be S.O.L. but hopefully someone else has an idea.

Robert I was in the same situation as you a couple months back when I finally had the money to start modifying my D2. I also have a 2000 SD without the hitch, I hate to break this to you because you don't want to spend 250 bucks but this would be the cheapest and saftest way to go and also get the hitch shackle braket which is about 50 bucks, so your looking at about $300. Unless you want to get an $G or Trek rear bumper but now your into the thousands. Don't use those rear points, first of all they are not strong at all and they are to far back under the truck and could actually damage your rear bumper if your towing at an upward angle, i.e. getting pulled out of a deep ditch or something.

what are the 2 pieces welded to the frame behind the "factory hooks"? is that a place to bolt a jate ring or something to?

robert,

If you do any wheeling that risks hitting the back end (eg a steep hill start) then that hitch will not only provide you with an exceedingly strong recovery point, but also a rear-end protector that will save your plastic bumper from getting ripped off. You can slide down on it with only the front wheels touching the ground, if you get the angles right. Its a good deal, especially if you have no front recovery point either.

I have an S 02 - I put a Hayman Reece tow hitch on it - they are very strong and suitable for recovery. LR here wont say that the front recovery hook behind the bumpabar (you take off a small plastic section to access it) is rated for snatch strap recovery. Has anyone snatched an 02 with that point? Any thoughts?

Scott - don't snatch there. The bumper on mine has already rotated up a few inches and I've never been snatched hard.

I have used that front point when i got stuck real bad in some mud. At the time i didn't have rear hitch or front bull bar. The tow truck winched me out from that point nothing happened but i am sure with some hard use it will snap.

A couple of you asked me if the Jate rings would fit the rear of a DII, so I stopped by the dealer this morning to check it out. They will fit right on if you don't have the bolt on trailer hitch. The hitch arms use the bolt holes that you would use for the Jate rings. So, if you have the hitch, buy a hitch receiver. If you don't have a hitch or have removed it for clearance, the Jate rings will work just fine.

Cheers

Robert - if you are in Australia you can get them anywhere (I dont know about OS). Mine was $168 through a 4wd Centre. It is load rated (as with the ball) to 3.5 tonn.

Thanks for all the feedback. Its a good thing that Disco's dont get stuck!

I went bush bashing on the weekend in my 02 v8 manual. The thing in amazing in low range on hill decents (even without HD on). As for climbing there was a 40 degree climb with axel twisters, holes and rocks with poor traction for about 50 metres - it went up like a rocket. I am very impressed by the traction control system that could be felt working away.

I might buy a recovery hook that mounts through the front chassis rail. Cheers
