yet in drive changes gears smoothly 80000 miles on my disco any advice is this normal just bought it

I had this problem for a while and a conscious effort to step harder on the brake before putting it into gear solved the problem, it might sound stupid but give it a shot.

Tim:
Do a keyord search (on the left under "utilities") for the word "clunk" and you will find more than you ever wanted to know. Yes, clunking is pretty normal, but it can also be aggravated by wear in the drive train. Ours became far less severe when we had a new rear diff put in.

i've got a clunker and probably over 1/2 of the people on this board
I posted on this when i first got my disco and everyone chimed it in as being a norm.

tim - check your u-joints (at ends of driveshafts) for play/wear.

And ... since you have a 95, look carefully at the rotoflex (the rubber coupling at the end of the rear driveshaft) for cracks. It's probably getting pretty old.
