In between the two holes, with the engine and transmission stone cold in the morning and in park or neutral. Otherwise, not more than 3/4 inch above the top hole at operating temperature. Our 95 with 75,000 miles is happy with Chevron or Pennzoil Dexron III (superceded the Dexron II called for in the manual) ATF. Sounds like this is a new truck to you. Do you know if the transmission filter has ever been changed? Should be either every 30,000 or once in the life of the truck at 30,000, depending on which side of the argument you believe. It's a royal pain to get to since you have to move the frame crossmember and drop the y-pipe to remove the pan to get to it. But if you're not sure, it's probably good preventative maintenance.
