After a short lived trip this past weekend to Rich Mtn. which left the Disco in rough shape, I started Monday to pull it apart, got frustrated, put it back together and limped it into the dealership. My front differential is fu&%ed. Swivels need attention too which I knew, but damn, that front diff is going to hurt. Too bad this couldn't have been the rear so I could go ahead with lockers back there. I haven't heard the $$ issue yet, but I'm sure that isn't going to be pretty either. Sometimes ya gotta love this addiction, sometimes ya gotta question yourself. Oh well.. Later.. RS

you can get a whole front axle on car-part.com for under $500 and pulling one out and putting a different one in is pretty simple.

just an idea

Robert, just curious, is that Rich Mtn in Blowing Rock NC? If so where exactly did you have troubles and hows the trail looking. Heading up that way in a few weeks...

Get a trutrak in the front - probably much cheaper than the rover deal.

Ya, you don't have to have a locker in the rear before putting one in the front. I'd get the True Trac or an ARB instead of the factory diff. Would probably be cheaper to get some axles from GBR then buying stock ones from the dealer too.

I just need my vehicle back ASAP. Unfortunately I drive ALOT with my job and borrowing vehicles a day at a time even for this past week has been an issue. When this thing gets paid off, I'll get something with better mpg for daily use, the Rover will then become a weekend warrior. Aaron, Rich Mtn. is in Ellijay GA, very nice place which I've only got to visit once, and not for long at that.

Robert,
Does this mean you are going to let the dealer address the issue? If you are considering alternatives, please let this board know and maybe some of us can help you out. I installed TTs front and back and have my diffs just sitting in my garage along with other misc parts.
A new TT for the front, close to $400, so if you are strapped like the rest of us, let us know.

Robert,
Dont let the dealer bend you over. Rover parts are very expensive new but can be cheap used. Right when I got my disco it had some issues. Long story short I grenaded most of the front passenger side axle. Stub axle, brake disc and caliper, hub, bearings, the wheel looked like it was about to fall of the truck.
The dealer quoted almost $3000 for parts alone, unfortunetly thats what rover parts cost. I ended up going to a local salvage yard and just got that side of the front axle complete for $250. I then had a mechanic I know swap parts. It still ended up costing alot but not $3000.
Go to a salvage yard, and get used parts, swap them out and your in business for cheap.

We're looking at under 1k right now. That is with re-doing the bearings/swivel seals, etc. as well as the front diff. I could try and do this myself with used parts, but it would end up being weeks as opposed to days. Unfortunately to me, time is money so I told the ••••••••••• to go ahead with it. I've been two places this week that I've had to get out of the car and walk back through the fu(*king woods or mud, where I usually just cruise right on in in my Disco. The Acura just doesn't look quite as nice with mud splashed down the side of it. Anyhow, I know this is not the best way to go about things by letting the dealer do it, but it is the quickest option that I have, and that is what I need right now.. Thanks for y'alls advice and opinions, that's always nice to have.. Peace.. Roberto

Move the rear diff to the front and buy lockers for the rear.

I would still just dig up a salvage yard complete front axle...shit i'v seen them for as little as $350. youd end up with spare parts that way.

but thats a good idea Jose

Musk & Robert,

Jose - can you do that?
I am wondering because - I took my rear diff out and put a DL in - was wondering if my left over rear is good as a spare for both diffs?
