Has anybody installed an electric cooling fan & removed the viscous coupled fan? Kenlowe Pacet etc. I am concerned about the loss of air flowing through the intercooler as the new fan will only switch on to cool the rad & will not be running all the time. Has anyone any experience of this? Thanks in advance. Phil. Rugby, England. |

My .02 only no electric fan(s) can match the CFM flow of an engine driven fan - period. you probably do lose a couple HP driving it, but IMO it is well worth it. Why add more problematical electrical stuff to a vehicle already over-encumbered with such? An engine driven fan with a WORKING viscous clutch and proper shroud is a great thing - don't mess with it. I wouldn't mess around with cooling an Aluminum block. LR put the VC fan there for a reason. One bad overheat and you could ruin the heads. -John |

Phil, BME, twin fan setup (16" and 11") wasn't even close to the airflow the stock fan provided. Notably, electric fans seem to be more popular in U.K. than in the U.S. - milder climate and (apparently) easier traffic being the reason. by "easier traffic" i mean not having to accelerate from standstill to 70mph going up a 6% grade as part of everyday driving. peter |

for the sake of comparison, my (puller) electric fans were running all the time, not on and off, and i had to force the auxillary (pusher) fans to run along to keep the temperature within the acceptable limits. peter |

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't think that the intercooler will be a problem, as the turbo will not be blowing unless you are moving. The exception to that would be the case where you are doing heavy wheeling at low speeds -- like in sand. But if you have a manual override switch, you should be able to deal with that. The TDi runs very cold in my experience and I would consider such a change just to cut down on the heat loss at low RPM. A guy from Norway told me that you can get rid of the fan ALTOGETHER in the winter time -- that the guys in Norway do it all the time. Let us know if you come up with some other info. |

Matusov: Was that a TDi or petrol V8 you were running? |
