Looking to purchase a trailer enclose vs open trailer 18-24 feet (enough to hold a car). Anyone have experience with one... any problem with cross-wind since Disco has relatively short wheelbase.

trailer will need it's own brakes (electric brakes)

you won't have to tow uphill, will you? :)

Done it with my D2 both on the highway and city driving for over 500 miles, no real problems, but you will need brakes on the trailer and a fat wallet to pay the gas bill. Also, it helps a great deal if you have a very tight fit with the receiver and ball mount.

Yeah.. handfull.. I am looking at a 20' enclose with e-brakes. I have pulled open trailers with a car on it, but I heard that enclosed trailer is more affected by cross-wind. Not much hills in Florida.. so I will be OK there.

Towing an enclosed trailer did you experience fish-tail much with crosswind?

I towed a good-sized uhaul trailer acoss the country. "The Orange Bitch," I named her. Barely got 10 miles to the gallon. Climbing the Rockies and climbing out of Death Valley sucked. Downhill from Tahoe in fresh snow was the most memorable event.

Disco94Jason,

I tow an open 24 foot trailer with two ATV's and camping crap. Load the truck down with four people and go through the mountains all over the west. I can tell you for sure that the D2 is not a great tow vehicle. Even with this light load I can tell it is a real burden on the rig. There just is not enough ponies there.

If you are going to tow something like a Wells Cargo 20' - I take my hat off to you. Saying it will be a handful is an understatement. I doubt you will ever get enough speed to need the brakes or worry about jack knifing the rig.

Good luck,

Curtis

I restore musclecars and use my '97 Disco to get them from point A to point B during the restoration. I own a 21' HD trailer with dual axles and have electric brakes on both axles going to a brake controller inside my Disco.

I would strongly recommend not to get electric brakes and go with hydraulic brakes. Hydraulic brakes is a much better setup plus it's cheaper in the long run.

In my experiance in trailering 4500 pounds of weight with my Disco it's alright around town but not on the interstate / freeway:( Gas mileage is horrible and it's not stable @ high speeds such as 60 MPH. The Disco is not setup to pull this much weight even thou the manual states 5500 pounds.

I'm planning on keeping my Disco and purchasing a used Dodge Cummings truck for those few times that I do tow. That way I can go with the flow of traffic and stay stable. I hope this helps:)

Did I mention that I live the rocky mountains...

I towed the rangie on a trailer behind the disco I.

Say I was ~6500lbs

Interesting. slow. s....l..........o.............w

does that make sense?

Get the hydraulic brakes. As sad as it sounds the disco stopped quicker with the trailer.

How about towing ski boats? Any problems there?

I've used my Silverado work trucks to tow some real heavy stuff and all we ever needed was electric brakes, but I could see the benefit of hydraulics with the Disco. I've never towed anything with the Disco....well, except a stuck jeep or two :)

Ira - what kind of projects do you have going? Trying to convince the wife that she doesn't want to trade her car in on an Explorer - what she really wants is a restored muscle car!!!

I have towed my 21ft Tige ski boat on a single axle eagle trailer no problem. Inboard ski boats tow very well because the motor generally sits directly above the axle. It doesn't exactly move out but it does fine. My trailer had surge brakes but I scraped them, didn't like the way they felt. so essentially I have no trailer brakes and it is fine, though I wouldn't recommend it. A little bit of caution goes a looooong way when towing anything. Thats just my (experienced) opinion.:) JMcD

I have a '97 Disco 1 and a '95 Suburban that I tow with. The '97 Disco does ok with my jetskis (2,500 lbs with skis, trailer and gear, no trailer brakes), but I have to have it balanced good. I also notice the weight back there on acceleration. Braking isn't a problem, the disco has much better brakes than my Suburban.

The Suburban is a towing beast, it doesn't have all that much power, (250hp), but it can tow trailers fast and stable. I don't even really notice the jetskis behind it and it will cruise easily at extra-legal speeds. I've also towed enclosed trailers, and flat trailers with cars on them and the suburban is very stable and comfortable at any reasonable speed that you want to go. With a car trailer or an enclosed trailer it gets about 10mpg, but with a 42 gallon tank, you still don't have to buy gas that often.

I would much rather drive my disco, but when I'm towing any distance, I'll go for the Suburban every time.

i towed the 6'x12' Uhaul with the disco (RTE 3", 235/85's, and stock gearing) that was loaded over what i should have been, from St. Louis to Cleveland. guessing close to 5500lbs (trailer and load) plus about 500lbs in/on the disco. sucked on gas at about 9-10mpg/hwy (typical hwy was 17-18 mpg for the same trip). had to floor it to get up hills at a blistering pace of 45mph and decreasing. didn't want to go over 65mph because the steering became way lighter (due to the RTE lift and the load bringing the rear down about 1.5")

Blue:

To answer your question on what musclecar that I'm currently working on is a '67 Olds 442 convertible with the trac-pak option package (W30). It's been a pain in the ass to finish this one up due to the level of restoration that I'm doing but I'm forcasting it to be complete by May:) :)

My next project for next year will be a Land Rover Series 1 / 2 or 3. Any good suggestions where to find a complete project besides the U.K. :(
