I get a vibration when i'm at a stop such as a light or stop sign, when the disco is in gear. Its a repeatative vibration and it seems to have to do with the idle. It dies down slightly when i put it in park. I am also seeming to get poor gas milage on the highway, 15mpg. Its a 1999 disco II. I tried using the redline fuel system cleaner, but it didn't seem to help at all. Any info would be appreciated.

15mpg is not bad fuel mileage for a Discovery, but should be a little better on the highway. How many miles are on the vehicle?

I've got a 99 D1 and I have the same prob with vibrations. But they seem to be intermittant(sp?). I find a tank or two of the good gas helps. As far as highway MPG I usually get about 13-15 depending on the wind and slow drivers in front of me.

I thought they all idled a bit rough. My '95 Discovery always did, and my new '02 does too. Something about the way the camshaft lift and timing is done, I'd suspect. And in four years with my '95, I never saw more than 15.5 MPG.

Try different brands of gas. That seemed to make a difference in how even and smooth idle was.

Check for vacuum leaks (don't forget to check the intake manifold as well as the hoses), and dump a can of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank - unless redline if formulated to clean injectors?

Two cheap and easy things to eliminate off the bat.

The weirdest thing happened to a friend of mine on his D1. It started idling very rough. The whole engine had a shake to it. Turns out the fan was missing two blades.

By vibration, do you mean a rough idle or something more sinister? At what RPM does it go away?

How many miles on the D2? Where are you located? Has your Check Engine Light come on lately? Are you using the right octane gas? D1's require 92+. Changed your air filter lately? When did you replace the plugs and wires last? Maybe the IAC valve is clogged (lets air in when the throttle is closed all the way).

Thanks,
Mike B.

I've got the vibration at idle as well. As far as MPG goes, it sounds about normal...though I did pull 350 miles out of 20 gallons averaging 85mph from Vegas to San Diego last weekend (the average dropped due to the hills coming out of Nevada...we were doing 90+ along much of I-15...8^)

WRT the vibration, I'm wondering if it could be due to dirty injectors causing a miss every few rotations at low RPM. How do Rovers idle when new (I dunno 'cuz I've never owned a new Rover...nor any other new car)?

Try starting simple and clean the stepper motor to correct erratic idle. Maybe the vibe will go away after that. On an unrelated note, change your oil after using any snake oil treatments.

I had the rough idle but changed to Magnecor wires and it went away. Just a thought.

if your truck is obdii diagnostics, there could be a code stored without the check eng light coming on.maybe having a diagnostic scan could help.
