I might have missed something, but here goes nothing. I have used this as my formula for tire pressure settings and have not had any problems (yet). Read the maximum tire weight @ pressure from sidewall, ie, 1984 @ 35. Multiply the weight by two because of two tires, ie, 3968 @ 35. Look on the label plate for the front and rear axle load weights and add any other weight that you have based by location, such as the roof rack. If the rack weighs 150#, I would add 100# to rear weight and 50# to front weight based on location. Alternatively, go to a public scale and weigh the truck with your load and write that number down for reference. My disco is stock, so it is 2668 front and 3572 rear. Next step is the math. Divide the axle weight by the tire maximum capacity and multiply that by the maximum capacity pressure, ie, front is 2668 / 3968 * 35 which is 23.533265. I round that number up to 24# front air pressure. Same math for the rear tires: 3572 / 3968 * 35 = 31.364774, which I round down to 31#. Last step is the test drive. I set the tires cold, drive for about 10 miles and check them again. Idea is that the tire pressre should not go up more than 5#. If it is over 5#, I then add any over the five mark, let it cool down and test it again. Luckily, my work is that far away. If there is something I am missing, please let me know. Bill M. |
