99 D1 had a valve job done 2 weeks ago. Picked it up on a Friday and when I took it back to the body shop on Monday for completion of repairs from an accident, I noticed a large spot (appx. 18") of oil in the garage. Got it back from the body shop a couple of days ago and it's still leaking, although only a spot the size of a softball. Is this likely residual oil from the valve job?

Mary-

No-
Some dripping is going to happen but 18"??

Did the leak just appear or was it leaking before the valve job? Location of leak is important as to whether it had anything to do with the valve job. If it's leaking from valve cover gaskets, head gasket area, lifter valley area, etc., I would blame whoever did the valve job as they would have opened these areas up and replaced gaskets.

Also-is this engine oil (golden/brown/black) or red (trans or poss. power steering)?

The first thing I would check is engine drain plug to insure it's on tight-possible catastrophe if not.

Good luck-

My 2 cents-

Greg, it's definitely engine oil and the Disco has never leaked. There wasn't a speck in my garage or driveway until this. Since LR collected their $1300, I'll swing by on Monday to have them check it. Thanks for confirming what I suspected!

Mary-

BTW-Let me clarify my response. When I said some dripping is going to happen I was referring to the fact that you own a Rover, NOT because you had a valve job! lol

Anyways-I still think getting a local independent land rover mechanic to check out your vehicle would be worthwhile (one recommended by local LR club). They would also be able to point out exactly where leak is from and what prob is.

And keep your oil level topped up until fixed!

Good luck-

About 6 months ago I had the valve job on my 98. I noticed it was leaking oil but not as bad as you have described. Took it back to dealer turned out the valve cover gasket had failed. Needless to say it was replaced for free.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow. When leaving for the football game this morning, there were 3 separate spots within a few inches of each other, the largest being smaller than before. Maybe that's because it's on cardboard instead of my garage floor. When picking it up after the game 9 hours later, there were 3 spots again.

Mike, I think part of my heartburn is from learning on this site that they are prone to leak and I didn't plan on paying to get it started, haha!
