is it a grindy sound that is most heard at low speeds, quick turns? if so it's your steering column... well - not the column - but a 35cent bushing that aligns the column, the bush goes bad and you need to replace the column. unless you can do a 'field fix' and modify how it's done. i did some mild wheeling a while back and the noise showed up. i thought it was the srs wires or maybe the metal horn 'drag leg'. found out its the column! i've had one on order for serveral months now....along with a transfer case. steve |

Definitely not a grind. It's a squeak inside the truck. Quite annoying. Mine tends to go away after I've been driving for a while. Or maybe it's like so many other noises on my truck that I begin to tune out one by one... I'm still interested in finding an answer. Maybe I'll take it apart over Thanksgiving. JR |

Mine has it to, I ripped the column apart and still couldn't find out where it was coming from, if you have better luck let me know. |

glad it's not just me. i've got it too, but i've mentally placed it a few notches below some other stuff on my priority list. i'll just turn the volume on my stereo up for now. ;) |

My 99D1 makes a noise sounding like the steering wheel is stripped or something. It usually happens while I'm backing out of a parking spot and low speeds. It sounds like "ongggggnkkkkk". Don't laugh. I'm trying to be scientific. A D -webber has suggested that it needs a little power steering fluid. Who knows? |

Being from Florida, I think its only cold weather related. Mine happened the other day when it was 50 degrees for the first time this year. In the past it happened on a trip to north carolina in the snow. Its not a grind but more like a low pitched squeal. |

On our 95, it was a plastic bushing where the steering wheel goes through the firewall. Per our former dealer tech in Anchorage, AK, it is cold related and there was a newer version (at least for our 95) that after he installed it the noise went away. He told me I could lube it to make the noise go away until he replaced the part, but I don't think I did (it's been a while ago). John |

I had the same problem! Not any more! It's where the steering shaft goes through the firewall through the rubber grommet thing. I took my grease gun with the needle tip attached and shoved it ino the grommet from the engine compartment side. Pumped in a few shots of grease. never again has it squeaked. Your welcome, Mike |
