Hi all. I saw a Discovery at a car show last week. It had the tent on the top which sucked me into the booth. Have been to the local Sacramento dealer and did the test drive and really liked it. The big deal for me is the mileage. Is 16 on the highway real. Problem for me is I drive a lot! I have a light foot on the gas typically and normally get over the highway mileage projections. What is your experience on the highway? I might go for an 2002, but there isn't much selection, so 2003 is more probable. Thank you from Dick in Davis, CA! |

I've got a 2003 Discovery. I'm averaging about 13 MPG city and 16-17 MPG highway. This is with 2,500 miles on the odometer--I'm told that mileage typically improves as the engine breaks in. For the record, I am in the northeast (cold temperatures these days) and have a light foot on the gas. -ema |

I will second Ema on the 03 but I don't forsee a more than 1-2 mpg improvement if any. I you are going to off road get it, there is nothing better in a package (not a trailer queen) but if mpg is your main concern I am sorry to say get a car. Or better yet a 2002 disco and with the money you save get a second hand car for the comute. Cause when you start to do the off road thing, as the tires get bigger and capabilities improve the mpg takes a hit from bad to worse. IMO the reality of the Disco is that if you can afford to buy it and keep it repaird the mpg is not that big of a deal, just read the posts and the past post about the feel and joy of owning a Land Rover and you will see that after all the griping is done everyone LOVES there truck. I will agree with all the posts that say that if MPG are your concern, you might not want a Discovery. If the LR is used primarily to off-road, consider a 2002 Disco and apply the savings towards a commuter car. You will probably save some on insurance and maintenance by applying the commuter miles towards another car and having the Disco as a weekend car. Having had my first Land Rover off-road experience this past weekend, I will say that the car is amazing. Even my girlfriend who was initially scared of off-roading loves it now. That smile you get from driving a Disco on a trail makes the gas mileage worth it. -ema P.S. Ross--I loved the pics of your car in the Photo Gallery. |

Richard, I agree with Ross that if you're worried about mileage, then maybe getting an older Disco is the way to go and take the savings and spend it on a daily commuter. But once you drive a Disco, you're probably going to forget about mileage and want to drive it all the time. It also does really make a difference on how hard you drive them too. If you bag it all the time, you're going to see terrible mileage. If you're relatively conservative, then it should be around what specs say. |
