I have a white D1 and I am considering doing my own blackout hood. Ya know, for when I find myself in the blinding Kalahari sun. Who has done this? What paint should I use? Brand?

Tommy,

I did my hood two years ago. I used some off the shelf semi-gloss black spray enamel. I think it was dupli-color or something like that.

I masked off the pronounced section of the hood with that blue maskers tape you get at any hardware store. I then scuffed the area to be painted with some 600 grit emery cloth and after the scuffing, wipe down with Acetone to get all the dust off.

I used about 4 coats to ensure coverage. I also sprayed in all diections. Left to right, top to bottom, diagonal. It hasn't started to peel up at all. I'm very happy with it. You can see the finished hood on my photo gallery.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips Dan. Yours looks great. Looks like a tree left some battle scars on your right front fender and door...OUCH!

go to the classified section. There is an add for the vinly decals and the price is reasonable

I'm prepping my Willow Green '97 Disco for a zebra stripe treatment with the krylon gloss black. By the way, plan to zebra the hood and sides. Leaving the rear door and top alone.
