Hi there,

I noticed an oil leak coming from the area where the oil pan and the transmission bell housing are joined together, this is on a DII. Is this one of two things; (1) oil pan seal wear and tear; (2) crank seal wear and tear?

Are these serious items that require immediate attention, or can they be monitored (e.g. oil level) and dealt with later on.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Arman.

Arman:
First off, the easiest way to deal with an oil leak is to track consumption and when it gets to the point where you are losing more oil than you can put in, it is time to fix!

As to your question, replacing an oil pan gasket is fairly straightforward. Replacing the rear main seal is far from it. if the oil loss is substantial (> one quart/thousand miles), you will probably want to replace the oil pan gasket and hope that was the source of your leak.

On the other hand, you might just want to tighten the oil pan bolts up and see if this does any good.

Sorry to hear of your leaks, but they are to a great extent, part and parcel of Rover ownership.

Arman - I own a 2000 DS2 SD (purchased new) and had a similar leak around 20,000 miles or so (I can't remember exactly). I noticed it with the vehicle parked in the driveway one day, just a small drip onto the frame. The vehicle was driveable and nothing out of the ordinary (whatever that means for a Rover) was going on. I called the roadside assistance number and had it towed to the dealership. It was the rear main seal and apparently the dealership was not surprised - an "assembly" issue on some of the vehicles. It was covered under warranty. Hopefully yours is too - good luck.

I had this problem on my '93 RR (103K miles). It looked like it was the rear main seal because the oil was dripping from the bell housing. I decided to drop the pan anyway, and found the rear main to be fine. Cleaned up the pan and block, new Right Stuff gasket maker from Pep Boys, and no more leaks.

If you do decide to redo the pan gasket, the pan might be stuck after removing the bolts. I had to use a bottle jack between the frame and the pan to move it sideways (using a point at the rear of the pan) to break the old seal. I didn't want to pry it off for fear of damaging the soft aluminum block.

The Disco II uses a rubber gasket with steel inserts around the bolt holes. Out of all the gaskets that rover makes I would say that this one leaks the least. The pre-bosch EFI trucks used what looked like "tub and tile caulk" on the oil pan and almost all of them leak.
A leak in the bell housing is more likly to be the cause. The common leaks in the bell housing are the rear mail seal, rear bearing cap seals, and the cam bore plug. The rear main seal is the most common leak and they normally leak around the bottom of the seal between the seal and the bearing cap. I normally apply a sealer around the outside of the seal to keep it from leaking after installing a new rear main. Normally they will not pour oil out but it will gradually turn your driveway to a nice shade of black.
