Since it is the holiday season it is time for me to give my Christmas list to the wife. I am thinking of asking for a roof rack for my 99 Disco 1. I don't think she will go for a full sized rack, too much $$$. So I was thinking about a rack that will sit on the existing roof rails. Any opinions on what to get? Thanks.

Dear Michael,

you give her the full size diamond, she'll go for the full size rack. :)

I use the Yakima Load Warrior for this purpose. It fits reasonably well on the existing cross-bars, and is good for light stuff like tents and sleeping bags when I have five people crammed inside for the annual family camping trip. If you get the 18" extension, you may want to get your own cross bars. But be careful as the Yakima ones I got are not high enough to accommodate the rack connectors at the raised rear area. They also are not cheap. I just returned them and use the factory cross bars. Loading it is a pain in the neck as it sits to far forward for the spare tire/ladder approach. However, the price was right, at it is easy for one person to take on and off.

Any roof rack that you pick will prevent you from getting into must parking garages, and will hurt your gas mileage, so as i look at that, go for the full size, to load the shorty racks you will have to stand on a ladder, your front floor or seat, this is a royal PITA, go big and never look back.
