My valves are tapping pretty bad so I guess it's time to rebuild or replace the heads. I have a 3.9 liter engine. I know that it's an old Buick design. Can I get new or rebuilt Buick heads as a replacement or should I stick with Rover heads?

You'd probably have a harder time finding Buick 215 heads than Rover heads nowadays. And while the Buick heads would fit, they have different mounting bosses for accessories. etc. So better off sticking with Rover heads.

There were also two different designs of Buick 215's-Buick, and Olds/Pontiac. The Olds/Pontiac versions had 5 bolt rocker covers and Buicks had 4 bolt covers. Olds/Pontiacs had an extra head bolt hole (6)and Buicks had five. The Rover engine is based on the Buick engine. Olds/Pontiac heads won't bolt on a Rover/Buick (however and Buick would bolt on an Olds/Pontiac block) Olds/Pontiacs also used a different rocker/valvetrain than Buick/Rover. Buicks used one size chamber head and Olds/Pontiacs used on type of piston and used differing chambers to adjust compression.

I'm sure that I've told you more than you ever wanted to know-LOL.

Thanks Greg. So I think that you are saying that these won't fit. Right? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1873582434

No, they will fit-however, the old Buick heads have different mounting bosses so when you go to mount your power steering pump, alternator, AC, etc, you will likely have to modify or fabricate new mounting hardware to put these items back on your engine-This may be relatively easy (drilling a new hole or two in mounts) or a big PITA. I also don't know if your stock rover engine intake would bolt directly to the old buick heads or not.

Good luck-

Thanks. I've started searching for original heads.

Are you going to replace the heads simply because of tapping? That sounds like lifter (tappett) problems and that's not too bad. Heads aren't really wearing parts other than cracks from overheat. New valves, guides, seats, springs--- in these old design motors any shop worth anything can do this.

You might try an engine cleaner (try keyword search) and imporve this. Is it bad cold and get better or go away?

Yeah-it may be just lifters-I've had good luck with Swepco 502 engine oil improver.
