I have to change the H20 pump on my Disco 97.
Wondering what size the honking bolt is, holding the viscous coupling. Also, how to stop the pulley from turning without special tooling to remove same. Any other tips greatly appreciated.

It's a 36mm or 1 and 1/4" wrench. REVERSE THREAD!!! Slide the wrench into place and smack it clockwise (when facing the engine from the front) with the biggest hammer you can find. That will break it free, and you can remove it by hand from there. oh yeah, did I say REVERSE THREAD!!??

Just thought of something-
I may have misunderstood your question. The above is to get the fan and viscous unit out of the way so you can get to the pump. Is that what you needed, or are you after something else?

Hi Craig,

Thanks for your reply. That is what I wanted.
However, I understand your reverse thread caution but looking at the instructions in the LR service manual:

"Note: Nut securing viscous unit to water pump has a right hand thread. Release by tuning anti-clockwise when viewed from front of viscous unit."

I'm a little confused. Are these instructions consistent with what your're saying? Also, how do you prevent the water pump pulley from turning when applying torque to unscrew viscous coupling from pump?

Thanks

Manj

My fault Manj-
I'm thinking of the earlier setup. Just checked with one of my techs. (yes we're here till midnight (don't ask)). follow the instructions in your manual and disregard my earlier advice. Sorry for the confusion, and good luck!

Manj- I will confirm what Craig said. On the '95 Disco, to loosen the fan nut, the handle of the wrench should move towards the passenger's side. I found this out the hard way.

To hold the pulley, I used one of those Sears rubber strap-wrench devices. Worked great once I cranked the wrench the right way!

Thanx Kristian,

As it turned out, I attempted to drive to Vancouver from Whistler to do the repair. The pump gave out in Squamish (45 min from Whistler).

Fortunately, I had the new pump and ideas from this site to steer a local (Ford,Chevs & Dodge town) shop to a successful repair.

Hopefully, I only need u guys for preventative maintenance tips in future.

Craig,

Don't laugh TOO out lod! That is still hurting, but I'm very happy with it. It was worth saving my vacation...

I'll be stopping by to say hi some random time in April....

See you then. BTW, I still want to have those gay-ass bright IPF headlights that Dermody was always talking about.

I'm drunk, sorry for the ramble, but if anybody wants any aftermarket equipment for their Rover, email Craig. He basically has an arsinal of everything that's available. They are market prices, and the advice from a "dealer" is great.
