Dealer told me I need new pads, ok, but I do all my maintance myself aside from warranty issues. Dealer wants over $250 for genuine front and rear brake pads, but places like discount rovers, atlantic british have after market for half the cost. Between mintex, lockheed (oe spec), Lucas and ferotto (oe spec), oh and genuine LR pads. Which are better, and buy running after market pads will that void the factory warranty if anthing else goes wrong with the brakes (calipers, rotors, etc)? Also local LR service center not dealer said I should turn the rotors when replacing the pads. Is this recomended as the rig only has 28k miles. 2000 Disco seriesII. Thanks for your help, Dave. |

Don't turn rotors. Replace only. No issues with other pads. OEM is lockheed. Minitex lasts longer, more prone to sqeak (like I care) rotors are not warantee items. Unless your mechanic messes up the calipers no issue there. Easy DIY if you are so inclined. Two bolts and a C-clamp and you are done. Should bleed the brakes while you are at it but by no means an imperative. Ron |

I agree. It's an easy DIY, and I liked just getting my hands in there. |

Thanks guys, but you need to replace rotors every time the pads are changed? On my toyota's, fords etc that was not the case, my rotors are in good shape, even the dealer said they were fine. I am able to change pads, looked them over and it is a very easy job. |

Rotors only if they are warped scored or below spec. Average is 2-3 sets of pads per rotor change Ron |

Dave, check the archives of disco2.com or the yahoogroups, disco2owners. The rotor issue has been discussed. But I can;t remember the resolution. |

Thanks guys for all your help! I went with the Ferotto oe spec pads, great pads so far!!! Ordered them from British Pacific, $150 before tax and shipping and put them in Weds. Took me about 2.5hrs and that include an oil & filter change. I have to say it was about as easy as 1,2,3!!! And to think the dealer wanted $740 for parts and labor for such a simple job. Go figure, plus my old pads were at 3mm, while I was going to have to change them soon, I still had some time left. Dealers will be dealers! |
